It's official: iPad's launching in the US on April 3, with the 3G model coming later in the month. Pre-orders start next week, March 12. It's just about on time.

By non-3g, they mean wi-fi only. I'm not sure why someone would call it "non-3g". That's a little under-descriptive.

TUAW reports that U.S. pre-orders for both Wi-Fi and 3G-capable iPads will go live on Apple's site at 5:30 AM Pacific Time / 8:30 AM Eastern Time tomorrow morning. Apple last week announced that pre-orders would begin on March 12th, but did not specify a time in that release.

We asked Apple PR to help you plan your day tomorrow, and they responded:

"Customers can pre-order online at apple.com at 5:30am Pacific time on Friday, March 12."
In addition to pre-orders, U.S. customers will also be able to reserve iPads for pickup at their local Apple retail stores once they become available, guaranteeing product availability and speeding the purchasing process.

While U.S. customers can pre-order any of Apple's six iPad models (three Wi-Fi and three Wi-Fi + 3G) beginning tomorrow, only the Wi-Fi models will be available on the launch date of Saturday, April 3rd. Customers purchasing Wi-Fi + 3G iPad models will need to wait until late April to receive their orders.

International orders for both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G iPad lines in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will begin shipping in late April as well, although Apple has yet to announce a date that it will begin accepting pre-orders in those countries.

With iPad pre-orders having begun in the U.S. just a few hours ago, observers are looking for any signs that might indicate how sales are going. According to one report, two orders placed 30 minutes apart this morning resulted in Order ID numbers approximately 10,000 apart, suggesting a rate somewhere near 20,000 orders per hour if order numbers are issued sequentially as they appear to be.

Now, of course, we can't be sure every order was for an iPad. Apple does sell other stuff. But at 830am in the morning on the east coast, my guess is that most of the orders were for iPads.
Fortune has followed up with a report on a more organized effort that looks to be showing in excess of 50,000 orders in two hours, roughly in line with the earlier estimate.

"51,000 orders in two hours," announced Victor Castroll shortly after noon. He's an analyst with Valcent Financial Group and an AAPL Sanity member who, with the blogger-analyst who calls himself deagol, has been monitoring the spreadsheet.
The estimates of course come with several caveats. On the downside as mentioned, not all of the orders being placed through Apple's online store are for iPads, although it is likely that a very substantial portion of them are, given the excitement over Apple's tablet device and previous launches.

But on the upside, the data includes order numbers, not unit numbers, and it seems reasonable that some purchasers are ordering multiple iPads at the same time. Apple has restricted customers to two iPads per person, limiting but certainly not eliminating this effect on the estimates, suggesting that 50,000 iPads in two hours may at least be in the ballpark.

Based on a sampling of 99 orders (for 110 iPads) over 19.5 hours, and not counting units that were reserved but not ordered, the Sanity team estimates:

* Nearly 120,000 iPads sold. Their math: 124,596 (orders of all Apple products Friday) minus 16,500 (the average number of online orders on a normal day) times 1.11 (the average number of iPads ordered per customer) equals 119,987 iPads.
* Wi-Fi over Wi-Fi+3G. Customers preferred the cheaper (and available April 3) Wi-Fi-only iPad over the Wi-Fi plus 3G model (due out at the end of April) by roughly two to one.
* 16, 32 and 64GB iPads are equally popular. Pre-orders were almost evenly split among the 16, 32 and 64 GB models, with a slight preference for the least-expensive 16 GB model, which starts at $499, and the most-expensive 64GB, which starts at $699 and can run as high as $829 (AT&T charges not included).

"Apple has been able to generate over $75 million in revenue in one day on a product that 99.9% of purchasers haven't touched or for that matter, even seen in person," said Victor Castroll, an analyst with Valcent Financial Group. "And, we're still three weeks away. That is amazing."

That's not entirely accurate. It's essentially an over-sized iphone/ipod. It uses the same OS, runs the same applications and even has exactly the same form factor, just larger. It's more accurate to say 99.9% of purchasers have most likely used one for a couple of years and now they are getting the large econo sized version.

Ooo. Wow. An Apple product had a lot of presales. I'm so shocked that I think we should post the figures in bold, large font.

First ever RR GNO on April 3rd at the apple store or best buy??
----
Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has reportedly begun preparations for the launch of Apple's Wi-Fi iPad models on April 3rd, providing its retail store employees with details of events leading up to the launch. Sources report that the iPad will initially be carried only at Best Buy locations offering devoted "store-within-a-store" Apple Shop sections. Approximately 675 of the company's over 1000 U.S. locations offer such dedicated sales areas for Apple products, and other locations and bestbuy.com will not carry the iPad at launch.

Best Buy locations will also not be opening early on launch day, as the company believes that it would offer little benefit due to a lack of sales competition while incurring additional operational expense. It appears at this time that only Apple and Best Buy will be carrying the iPad in retail stores at launch.

Fortune reports on a new research note from analyst Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley citing iPad suppliers now forecasting shipments of 8-10 million iPads for calendar year 2010, up from previous estimates of around 5 million. The report notes, however, that shipments are not necessarily equal to sales, as some of that production will remain in distribution channels at the end of the year. Consequently, Huberty maintains a sales estimate of 6+ million iPads for the year.

According to Huberty, investors who are bearish on the iPad say it lacks a "killer app." Apple's near-term market, she counters, is the sub-$800 notebook computer market (30 million units in the U.S. and 120 million units globally). Longer term, she expects the books, magazines, video and iPad-optimized apps currently in the works to broaden that market.
Over the shorter term March-to-May timeframe, suppliers are now reporting that they expect to ship 2.5 million iPads during the initial surge, up significantly from Huberty's earlier estimate of 750,000 through the end of June. Analyst reports earlier this month had reported some delays in early iPad production that would limit launch quantities, although it is unclear exactly what the source of the delays were and what the magnitude of their effect has been on unit quantities.

Huberty, a prominent tech industry analyst, had been noted for her bearish estimates on Apple's financial performance over the past several years, but has come around in recent months to issue several reports citing Apple's leadership position in the mobile Internet industry and offering strong "bull case scenarios" for Apple's future growth.

With the Apple iPad set to go on sale this weekend, a number of news outlets have published reviews of Apple’s new tablet. Here’s a smattering of opinions:

* Sun Times: This is the first true tablet. Everything else is a laptop with the keyboard removed.
* New York Times: It’s basically a big iPod touch. The big display is a game changer for some apps. But the on-screen keyboard stinks.
* TechBlog: It’s not a PC replacement, but it’s an entirely new class of device (with a surprisingly decent on-screen keyboard).
* USA Today: Netbooks will need to change or adapt… but the on-screen keyboard stinks (mix messages much?)
* Wall Street Journal: You can use it surf the web, send emails, and consume media. You won’t use it for creating large documents.
* Boing Boing: It will change the way you read books — think “Harry Potter” books with moving pictures.
* PC Magazine: The iPad is lighter than a laptop, but kind of heavy to hold in one hand for extended periods.
* ABC News: Hey look, it’s a video!

Interestingly, while some reviewers hated the on-screen keyboard, others found it comfortable. The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg says he preferred it to some netbook keyboards.

Reviewers also differed a bit on the battery life — but nobody came up with test results that were that far off from Apple’s 10 hour estimate. The shortest I saw was about 9.5 hours, while several reviewers managed to get 11 to 12 hours of run time while playing videos continuously.

The new A4 processor is reportedly quite snappy, making the iPad feel much more responsive than an iPhone. And the general consensus appears to be that the tablet is excellent for surfing the web and consuming media — and not as good for producing media. The New York Times’ David Pogue had one of the most clever reviews, because he split the review in half. For techies, he basically admits that the tablet has a lot of failings. It doesn’t play Flash video. It doesn’t multitask. But for casual users, that large display but touch-friendly, iPhone-like interface is a game changer.

So… now that the reviews are coming in, the question remains — is the iPad a netbook killer? It sounds like that depends on what you use a portable device for. At 1.5 pounds and with a 10+ hour battery, the iPad could be a great device to carry around the house or on the road while leaving your notebook at your desk — if you don’t need Flash, multitasking, a physical keyboard, or the ability to run Windows apps.

Prediction: HP releases WebOS tablet by the holidays

I hate to see the Courier get cancelled. I don't know how big a market is for a device like that, but I and the rest of the designers at work were looking forward to it. :/
