39. Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Okay, now this was just plain crazy. I didn't know anything about this guy going into this album. He's another jazz guy, and he's mainly a composer who plays piano and double bass. He has a band of 10-12 members, and they sound like they're playing different songs most of the time, and they probably are. Then the piece all starts to come together and the different parts convene into a whole before dispersing again. It's like witnessing creation from chaos then watching the wind scatter it all away again. This guy was ahead of everyone else.

40. James Brown - Live at the Apollo

Everyone knows what a great performer James Brown was. Let's face it, he wasn't a great-looking guy, but he was such a great performer that he could get women sexed-up and screaming despite his ugly mug and bull testicles. Live at the Apollo shows off not the Sex Machine James Brown but the romantic crooner James Brown. It doesn't stop the ladies from getting all moist. And for all the fun Eddie Murphy had pointing out how no one could understand James Brown, James Brown could sing. He could croon like Elvis, but he had the blues like Muddy Waters. And man, could he ever bring that shit. If I have to compare him to Sam Cooke, I'll say Sam Cooke wanted the keep the party going. James Brown wanted to get laid.

Great piece from Charles Mingus. Best jazz intro ever.

41. Stan Getz & João Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto

I said during the other Stan Getz album that Jazz Samba is like Barry White in Brazil. Well, Bossa Nova isn't so much about doing it, but it's about the stuff leading up to it. It's about makeouts and getting a chick's stockings off. Once you're there, you put on the Jazz Samba. It's very calm and quiet, definite mood music. Getz played sax and Gilberto played guitar. They duel back and forth over who can be sexier. "The Girl from Ipanema" is the big song here. If you know that, you know what the rest of the album sounds like. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year back in the day. *lights sparkler*

42. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night

This is a little more like it. Here's The Beatles still in their early stages, but now they're writing their own songs and boy howdy is it ever a catchy bunch. While With the Beatles showed some promise, A Hard Day's Night showed that they were more than just a bunch of flavor of the month pretty boys. There are great melodies and harmonies all over the place. They weren't approaching any new subject matter, but would be explored soon enough. If you're not convinced of how great the trail these guys blazed was, go back and listen to the other big bands of the British Invasion like the Stones, the Kinks, and the Who. They were good, but they weren't THIS good. They'd still be filling albums with old blues and R&B covers for a few years. The Beatles broke out of that phase in 1963. The others would take until at least 1966 to begin showing that much promise. Three years might not seem like much today, but back then bands were releasing at least one album per year, so that's a lot of cover tunes and treading water until the big creative breakthrough. And when they got there, The Beatles were already into the heavy drugs and some really crazy shit. They kept kicking the line of greatness further and further out. They were simply amazing.

Somey, can we get a magic number update?

There's not a bad track on the album, but I guess I like these the most:

A Hard Day's Night
I Should Have Known Better
If I Fell
Can't Buy Me Love
Any Time at All
Things We Said Today
You Can't Do That

A Hard Day's Night has always beat me. It's in my bottom three of the Beatles songs I know.

Give me these:

I Should Have Known Better
And I Love Her
I'll Cry Instead
Any Time at All

43. Jacques Brel - A L'Olympia

There is nothing in this world gayer than a French circus. Jacques Brel was a Belgian who sang cabaret and music hall kind of music. He was also an actor and director for a bunch of movies you've never heard of. If you've ever listened to Edith Piaf-- and if you haven't, you should--you'll recognize his music. She dabbled in this theatrical stuff on occasion, but her way was with a standard ballad. Jacques Brel was the ringleader at the gayest, wackiest Cirque du Soleil ever unleashed on unsuspecting Middle Americans. Of course, the whole thing is in French so I couldn't understand a word of it. He could've been singing about economic policies or string theory for all I know. Since it sounded like circus music, I can only imagine he was singing "Look at the prancing pony!" for 45 minutes straight. Despite the language barrier, I could at least get the sense of the drama at play. There were moments of intrigue, so he at least had a way with performing, but they were few and far between and the album was in one ear and out the other.

44. Solomon Burke - Rock & Soul

Solomon Burke is a big fat black dude who probably sang a lot of gospel music in his day. No gospel here though as he mainly runs through some boogie blues and ballads with a lot of Caribbean influences. It's nice that he added some extra flair to some standard R&B, but I don't think I'll be looking into anything else he did.

Well, holy crap! Here it is!

45. Dusty Springfield - A Girl Called Dusty

I never knew this chick was British. I guess I was thrown off by the Dusty in Memphis album and figured she was another old school country singer. Nope, I was wrong. She runs through some girl group kinda standards on this album. It was perfectly pleasant, but some of those songs are too sappy for me. "Mockingbird" has always been a beating, and "Hoping and Wishing" has too much of a stalker angle to offset the sweetness. It's a creepy tune, yo.

Up next: The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers, or The Rolling Stones...whichever you feel like calling it

46. The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers

I complained earlier about With the Beatles being half covers. Well, this album is nearly all covers, with only one Jagger/Richards composition ("Tell Me") and two written under some early pseudonym. None are particularly adventurous tunes. The covers are all R&B and blues. They do a good job with them, but nothing spectacular. If anything, the songs show the band as a slightly more dirty version of the Beatles, which was always part of comparing the two: the good kids vs. the jagoffs. Here, they showed they were a competent band, but this isn't close to their best stuff. Their next album would have "Time Is on My Side" and the ball would slowly start rolling then.

It's 3-for-1 day.

47. Buck Owens - I've Got a Tiger by the Tail

One thing I like about Buck Owens is that he was from Bakersfield, CA. He played country music because that's what he discovered he liked. There wasn't any pride and cliches of the South on display here. He wrote and played within a genre that fit him. The twang in his voice was natural and not put on. Like the other early country albums I've heard so far, there's an honesty in the music here. I'm still not thrilled with slow, weepy, steel guitar ballads but it's not loaded up with those here. I really liked the song "Trouble and Me".

48. Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club, Hamburg

Those no denying Jerry Lee Lewis is a primo asshole, but holy shit, could that guy throw down. This is one of the most ball-to-the-wall awesome rock 'n roll performances I've ever heard, and I've seen Ween 10 times. You've heard nearly every song on this album in some form. Some are his own, some are covers. Take what you know of these songs and increase the tempo by about 50% and you've got this particular show. The guy was a maniac, and he could bring the rock like no one else.

49. The Sonics - Here Are the Sonics

The Sonics were an early and big influence on psychedelic and punk rock. They played loud and made a nice, fuzzy noise. Naturally, they were too far ahead of their time to be popular in their own day. Most of the album is again full of covers (I've officially heard "Walking the Dog", "Money", and "Good Golly Miss Molly" too many times now.) The originals have titles like "The Witch", "Psycho", and "Strychnine". To think people in 1964 weren't ready for such songs is an understatement. The Sonics are another one of those bands only popular with people in bands. But listening to them you can hear where the Stooges and the MC5 got their influence. If you don't know who they are then I'll just say you can thank the Sonics for Nirvana. There are a lot of other influences in between the two but I don't have the tools here to draw a whole friggin' tree.
