32. Booker T. & the MG's - Green Onions

I heard this album once before back in college when a friend had a copy of it. As an early-60's, all-instrumental rock album, we agreed it's good background music for general activities. I didn't listen to it again until today, and my opinion stands. It wasn't until late in this listen that I realized the song titles were not labelled correctly by the Internet Shithead who made this album available for the tech-savvy masses. I wasn't paying attention to the titles (again, I was letting it be background music for general activities, i.e. work), but when I recognized "Twist and Shout" and looked down to see it under another name, I realized I'd basically been listening to the album on Shuffle. Thing is, it still worked. This isn't an album to sit and analyze, but rather to let it play and enjoy it for what it is: a likeable batch of instrumentals by a very good backup band. Oh, and I fixed the song titles for future use. That guy who messed them up is a real dick.

The link to the list doesn't work anymore. Could you share the list with the class?

Weird. The link didn't work but it found it when I went thru my bookmarks.

The updated list I'm going by.
Another in case the first breaks.

33. Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba

I get the impression that samba music is like Barry White for Brazilians. It's the stuff they use to get their women all lubed up and ready to rock. It's sexy enough that they can get turned on even while dancing with some flighty fancypants in a loose, flowered shirt. This album adds some jazz to it, but I think I would've preferred the samba by itself. It's a nice enough mix, but I was picturing Charo shaking her ass on a bunch of 70s variety shows until some dude had to start blowing his nose into his saxophone. It didn't get me as lubed as I could've been. Just sayin'.

Are you really going to go through that entire list? Is this list supposed to be considered albums that are better than all the others? How are you listening to the entire album?

If you only listen to each album once are you giving it a fair shake? Your first impression may be that it sucks or it's not for you but how do you know it wouldn't grow on you? I'm sure you didn't like beer or some food item when you first tried it but over time you have come to enjoy it. just sayin.

I'll give Tit a pass if he doesn't want to hear each album more than once. Listening to and reviewing 1000 songs is quite a feat. Listening to and reviewing 1000 albums is a test of will, stamina and courage.

So he just wants to hear the songs so that he can say that has heard them or he wants to listen to the songs because some unknown source told him these albums are good and worth listening to and appreciating, even if it takes a couple of listens? Doesn't matter to me. I was just curious why he wants to put himself through something like that. Is he doing this at work? Can you really take from the song what the artist intended when you are trying to write instructions on how to fix a whatchamacallit or some other technical text? Just askin.

And for the record, I listen to music while I'm working all day anyway, so listening to them all isn't a big deal. Finding something new to say about each one is a whole different story.

Also, congrats to David the Negro, who guessed 31 in the How Long Until Terd Shits in This Thread contest. He was the closest to the number of albums listened to when Terd shat in the thread. Thanks to everyone for playing.

34. Ray Price - Night Life

Here's some more old country, and here's what I like about old country: This guy didn't feel it necessary to throw out a fake accent to make sure we all knew he's from the south. His music is genuine, mostly slow shuffles about love and being lonely. Sometimes he even veers closer to blues than country. I also liked that he opened the album with a spoken word thesis of what the album's about. That should happen more often, even if it's just some dude saying, "Here's a bunch of songs we wrote when we were drunk." I'm throwing this last bit out to the dead poolers. This guy is still alive and in his 80s. He's the kind of person who dies every year that no one thinks of. Easy points for next year. Just sayin'.

With your balls sufficiently busted, I'll answer.

1. You're right that only one listen isn't fair to some of them, but no one said to listen to them more than once.
B. I have no idea who's behind the list but I'm guessing it's a bunch of music experts. Some of their picks are atrocious (Limp Bizkit?) but I'm all for giving things a fair shake.
XII. I'm a music nut so I'm actually interested in listening to all these, and I'd still be doing it even if the forum didn't exist and I didn't have to write anything about it.

35. The Beatles - With The Beatles

I love The Beatles. They are probably the most important band in rock history, and, honestly, I don't trust anyone who thinks they're 'meh'. However, there is something a bit 'meh' about With The Beatles. I could never get into it much. There's too many covers, it's got too much of the crowd-pleasing KLUV simplicity, and it doesn't approach the bold directions they'd go when they'd start taking drugs a few short years later. I first got this album back in the 80s when the catalog was released on CD. I bought Sgt. Pepper's and Rubber Soul with my own money, and my mom, noticing my interest in The Beatles after kicking Elvis's corpse 10 years earlier, bought me this album because "this one's got all the really good songs." Well, like I said, it's half covers, and none of the originals are truly great. I had trouble sitting through it even though it's barely a half-hour long. I was so uninterested in it I ended up tossing it into her small collection of K-Tel 50s and 60s CDs, only to take it back years later after she died and realizing my dad would never listen to it since it rocks a little too hard. I've listened to it a few times now with more mature ears and there's nothing really wrong with it. I see it as an early look at a band who would go on to do much greater things. But it's the lesser of all their albums, and there are some that have been left off this list that I'd much rather hear again over this one.

I know it was hard for them to come up with 1001 albums, but after looking at the song list, this album sucks.

36. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

When Bob Dylan was 22, he wrote "Blowin' in the Wind". When I was 22, I was smoking drugs and watching TV. I bet most of you are more like me than Bob Dylan. Dylan gets made fun of a lot because he's got that voice. It's not really fair, though. Sure, you can't understand him now, but he was a decent singer early on. This was only his 2nd album. On his first, he mostly did a lot of Woody Guthrie kinda stuff. It was more of the folkie, non-political side of Guthrie. Here, he takes a pretty big step forward. Rather than covers, he borrows the melodies from old folk songs and applies his own lyrics reflecting the political and social climate of the early 60s. There are some great songs here: "Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Blowin'". You'd think this would make for a pretty heavy album, but unlike that rancid gash Joan Baez, Dylan has a sense of humor and throws some lighter fare, sometimes bordering on nonsense, in there for fun. Woody Guthrie did a lot of that, too. At 21, Dylan was imitating his greatest influence. By 22, he was creating a way of his own.

:babyarm: Help! is the first Beatles album that I really like. And a lot of people will think I'm psycho for suggesting this, but I think it's better than Revolver and Rubber Soul. It's the perfect bridge between the bubble-gum mop top Beatles and the stoned out of their mind Beatles.

You've Really Got a Hold On Me is their only cover that's worth a damn because the harmonies are pretty cool.

37. A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector

I hate Christmas music and I don't think I'm alone on that. It's not a Scrooge thing, I'm just sick of the same 12 songs played over and over. All the best songs were written decades ago and covered to death. No recent songs capture the simplicity or spirit like the old ones, so we're stuck with the same shit, different year. It feels weird to confess now that this album gets a pass from me. That's because Phil Spector got his best bitches together and had them sing the popular, secular tunes with his Wall of Sound thing. What we get are a batch of Christmas songs that sound great and have some real joy to them. If you're stuck in the car with someone who wants Christmas music, you could do a lot worse than this album. I'll keep this one around for later this year and hope it gets more play than the soulless white people like Gene Autry that I'm usually stuck having to sit through. BTW, the best Christmas album is still XFM: It's a Cool Cool Christmas. Walt will vouch for that. If anyone needs a copy, *thumb to mouth, pinky to ear* call meh. I'll hook ya up.

38. Sam Cooke - One Night Stand! Live at the Harlem Square Club

This is a concert recorded in 1963 that wasn't released until 1985. Don't know why that happened, but maybe it had to do with his weird murder in 1964. Whatever, this is an awesome, high-energy performance by a guy who could've given us a lot more. James Brown gets a lot of credit for his live performances and albums, but Sam Cooke proved here he was every bit his match. From the moment he takes the stage, he never stops. (I know this probably isn't a complete show, but he never stops for the duration of the album, at least.) He's constantly vocalizing in some way, and he keeps the party going and the people dancing. The audience has some low energy at the start of the show but by the end they're singing along and having a great time. It's a helluva show. "Twisting the Night Away" is one of the great overlooked soul songs from the early 60s.
