I showed up to one mission riding in a helicopter. when the guy took off, i had no chance. i don't know if i'll get the chance to play that mission again.

by the by, if you get a chance to date carmen, she likes the strip club. oh, and show up in some nice threads and a decent car. bitch is a gold digger, and she won't mess around with a broke, broke.

I took out playboy and I took out the cop brother. I bet that's probably the same ones most people took out.

It is a bit of a beating to be contacted all the time. Especially when that douchebag Roman calls your cell while you are shadowing someone. Although I did learn that the phone has different ring modes, so not a total loss.

so the extra help is no good? i may not bother then. for the past couple of nights i've only been going to whoever shows up on the map. if no ones there, i go get a handjob, or drive around looking for sweet jumps. or pidgeons.

goddam pidgeons.

The phone can be set to vibrate for shadow missions. If they call and you don't want to hang out, say yes then immediately call back and cancel, it doesn't affect your rating. And the phone has a sleep mode as well. It essentially puts the entire story on pause so you can roam and explore the city.

It gets immeasurably more fun if you play with friends you know well. I hooked up with 5-6 buddies and we played a few different modes, it was a blast.

yeah, it's a little dicey if you try to play team modes with random folks, unless they're pretty cool. it's always best to hook up with buddies.

'Auto' Outpaces Hollywood Blockbusters

In its first week in the stores, Grand Theft Auto IV took in more than $500 million, more than any movie in history has made in its first week. Opening-day sales of the game on April 29 came to $310 million, breaking the record of $300 million set by Microsoft's Halo 3 last year. In a statement, Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two, which distributes GTA-IV, and the former president of 20th Century Fox film studio, said, "We believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. This signals just how important interactive entertainment has become in entertainment writ large."

i'm trying to go back now and get some achievements. it'd be nice if the maps on whattheydontwantyoutoknoworsomesuch would take off the dots for the pigeons/jumps you've already found.

esp the pigeons. damn, there's a lot of pigeons.

Multiplayer GTA Race feature is pretty fun. When I played last night some guys had a bus on it's side blocking the road and were firing rockets at the other drivers. Good times.

Like this?

That thing was extremely handy for Assassin's Creed, wish they'd make a version for GTA 4.

It's fun, it generally just turns into a free-for-all. Which is nice.

no, there are maps in the game you can access through the tw@ store that show where the ramps and pigeons are. only thing is it doesn't update (remove the dot when you kill the pigeon) so keeping up with it is tough. There's plenty of online help though. I found a website that breaks the map up into manageable sections, so it's a little easier to keep up with where you've been. (and i don't consider that cheating, since they give you the map in the game)

I'm still only half-way thru the one-player narrative but here are my fave GTA IV moments.

After running over and killing 20+ pedestrians, Niko says "Oops! My bad." in lighthearted broken English.

Niko and LJ's socio-economic political discussions en route to a topless club.

The helicopter

Launching a rocket into a police car during a firefight.

Any of the parody-conservative chatter on the news channels

Documentary on the history of Liberty City

Hey, the fake NPR is just as funny.

And my favorite giggle came from "I'm just saying, that song's the shit."

Anybody get 3 lap dances in a row yet? That was amusing.

I still haven't made it far enough to unlock the last island, but I'm up to 40% done overall. I'm getting better at beating Brucie's races too.

race with a comet (porche) when you can. it's the best car as far as acceleration (fastest) and handling. and I'm pretty sure the top speed is the same as corvette/viper/lambo/ferrari.

I've been racing with the Viper, but I also lean out the window and try to shoot out some tires at the starting line. If I can knock out a couple cars early, then great. But what I've found in the last couple races that if I can get out in front at the very beginning then I can usually put a lot of distance between myself and the other cars. I actually lapped a car in the Algonquin race without shooting out any tires.

I'm wondering how the game picks the cars you're racing against. It seems kinda random; one of the races was against several SUVs and another was against all old muscle cars.

I don't bother with trying to take anyone out. At the start, I stay back and let everyone go. after the first turn, half to most are usually driving each other off the road. When the dust clears, I'm in 3rd or 4th place. None of those cars can take a corner worth a damn, so I just bide my time and overtake them when I get an opening. Even if I have a slower car I can usually win with no problems.

I started shooting out tires on the very first race because I was awful in that souped up car Brucie makes you use and had to keep replaying the race. Since then it's been better.
