The Gettysburg episode of Ken Burns 'Civil War' is on PBS right now, fyi. They just finished the Chamberlain part. Good stuff.

I'm sure the part where the whitey and the black become friends is completely authentic.

So it's late at night and I'm watching Gettysburg. I fully stand by my original judgment. God's and Generals is not good and neither is Gettysburg. It is heavy handed and poorly acted and the production value is just as bad. Stu has never been more wrong on a film. Glory blows it out of the water. Stay away from this movie. Watch Glory or Ken Burns instead. It's just plain bad.

I know it has a lot of big names but watching Gettysburg is like what I think it might look like if a bunch of fatass old reenactors recorded one of their fake battles. So basically Gettysburg is on the same level as 40 year olds larping.

Watching Field of Dreams on Encore HD. I forgot how good Burt Lancaster was in this.

Tonight at 9pm is Citizen Kane from 1941. Many consider this to be one of the finest movies of all time. Guess not because it lost the Best Picture award to How Green Is My Valley. Still, it's a good flick. 119 minutes.

For fun, Tit's review of How Green Was My Valley

Tit Whistle wrote:
How Green Was My Valley - So you got a village in Wales with a coal mine. Everything's real traditionalist. Men work, women stay home and tend to the men. The focus is on one family, and a lot of things happen to them over the course of the movie. It's all seen through the eyes of their youngest son who mysteriously never ages, unless we're to believe things like marriages, births, and deaths all occur within about a one month period. It all moves at a snail's pace. I have no problem with a movie that takes things slowly, but this movie places no urgency in the events that place. So much happens to this family, but it's all treated like minor details. First, we never get to really know anyone in the family. It's more like we get to know the family as a character and the community as a character, but the only individuals who stand out are the ones who get more lines of dialog than the others. This makes it so when a major life event occurs to one of the characters, we don't feel much of an attachment and we miss out on the emotional payoff of the moment. A couple times, the mine runs out of work and some of the older sons are forced to split and move to America (fuck yeah!) They just kinda walk off and are never seen again. Another son dies in a mine accident. What's the next scene? The birth of his son. No funeral, no mourning, no payoff. Life just goes on. It's not a movie hated, I just don't have much admiration for it. I do like some of the Welsh names. More people should give their kids Welsh names. Next person on the forum to have a kid must name it Gwilym if it's a boy or Angharad if it's a girl. I have spoken.

Did it deserve to win?: No. There was a little movie called Citizen Kane that came out the same year. Not to mention The Maltese Falcon.

Tonight at 7pm is The Apartment from 1960. It stars Jack Lemmon and Shirley McLaine. I am not a huge fan of this movie, but Tit loves it. It won 5 Oscars including best flick. It was right in the heart of Billy Wilder's run as one of the top directors in hollywood.

Tit's review...
Tit Whistle wrote:
The Apartment - First off, Stu is wrong. Stu said this movie was just okay. Stu lumped it in with all the shit winners from this era. Stu made it sound like it was another piece of crap like My Fair Lady. Stu completely got it wrong. Stu misjudged this movie. Stu disagrees with me when I say this movie is really good. Stu is probably bothered by the casual infidelity portrayed throughout it, though it's nothing Stu hasn't seen on Mad Men. Stu is jealous of the manic comic charisma of Jack Lemmon. Stu feels uneasy in the pants gazing at a young, hot Shirley MacLaine. Stu has a good chuckle seeing a young Mr. Hand, but Stu reflects on Fast Times and the Phoebe Cates pool scene, which also made him uneasy in the pants. Stu really got this one wrong. Stu should not be trusted when it comes to judging the Best Picture winners. Stu needs to grow up.

Did it deserve to win?: Stu would say maybe Psycho or Spartacus deserved it more, but Stu at least agrees that a movie like Spartacus would never get the top prize the year after Ben-Hur. Stu knows Psycho isn't the kind of movie that wins these awards, despite its deserved classic status. Stu may disagree, but this movie holds up and is a worthy winner.

We're going old school tonight.

The Phantom of the Opera from 1925 is on tonight on TCM at 9pm. This is a silent movie starring Lon Chaney. We all know the story of the phantom. This movie has one of the most iconic makeup jobs in the history of cinema. Great movie that's closing in on 90 years of age. 93 minutes.

Tonight at 7pm, The Maltese Falcon from 1941. This is another of the greats that lost the Oscar to How Green is My Taint. Humphrey Bogart is Sam Spade. This is perhaps his best role. 100 minutes.
