Just got a PS3.
Using a somewhat old receiver. (An old Onkyo, i think it only handles up to like Dolby 3 or some shit)

When using external sound (from the TV to the receiver, and subsequently the speakers) the audio stutters big time.

Am I right in assuming I need a newer receiver?

Could be the receiver. Could be wiring. What type of wiring are you using?

Get an Xbox.

Or, (silly question) did you check the settings on the PS3 and select stero out or digital out?

That was meh next question. Is the PS3 set up to broadcast in 5.1 and your receiver doesn't do that?

that's pretty much the case. The receiver I have is an old ass radio shack one that I got from Cameltwat.
I'm thinking it's time to just go out and get a new receiver. I'm not sure there's a way to n-rig this shit up.

yep.

And optical is the way I'll wind up going for audio.
I bought a receiver today, a lower end Sony.
It has three HDMI in, one out. I thought I was set, right? The only issue is, (and sony doesn't exactly explain this, nor does Fry's) the HDMI doesn't pass along the audio the external speakers you may have connected to the receiver.
It will pass along everything to the TV fine.
I have no idea why. Why even bother putting HDMI inputs on a fucking receiver?
Anyhoo, the PS3 has optical, and the receiver has optical. Provided that sony didn't somehow cripple the optical, too, I'll get a cable tomorrow and go that route.

If you need cabling, I've heard there's some electronics company based out of Denton you can go through.

so you can funnel everything through it. Plug your sat/cable, games, and DVD into the receiver and you can have just one cable going to your TV. That way you don't have to change the input on the TV and the receiver every time you switch mediums, only on the receiver. It's pretty fucking handy.
