Anchorman 2 - I actually laughed more at this one than the first one, which really isn't saying too much. Probably because of the lack of hype for this one. The first one was moderately funny. This is about the same, but not as quoteable. I don't get Brick. The cameo fight scene is a beating, just like in the first movie. They also had some references to things that happened after this movie supposedly took place (1979) - maybe that was a point that went over my head.

Seems like a weird premise at first. An introverted letter writer, in the middle of a divorce, falls in love with his interactive operating system with a sultry voice. Having slept on it, I've decided it is a genius strategy as the second she gets needy you just shut the bitch down and reboot.

Didn't hate it, but it is surreal.

Prisoner- not bad.

Godzilla- Not realistic. Who uses a pay phone anymore?

I watched a buncha X-Men this weekend in prep for the new one, but I never got around to seeing the new one because I was too busy watching the older ones.

X-Men - Hokey in the way action movies from 15 years ago are hokey.

X2 - Much improved on the first.

X-Men: The Last Stand - Brett Ratner directed. Didn't bother.

X-Men: First Class - Liked it a lot, though some more development with the fringe mutants would be nice for those of us who never read the comic.

The Railway Man

Colin Firth plays an English WWII vet who was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Singapore. He was caught building a radio and submitted to a variety of tortures that would have made George Bush proud. The story starts off years later with him meeting Nicole Kidman, marrying her and susbequently suffers bad bouts of PTSD.

Colin's character discovers that one of his torturers is alive and actually working as a tour guide at the sight of his imprisonment which has been turned into a museum. Of course he returns to Singapore to confront his torturer and seek vengance.

Very dark movie, but Colin Firth does his usual kickass job of acting.

Oh gawwwwd. That sounds boring!

What was sad was him being needy and getting dumped by her/it. It was a pretty good movie. A lot of phone sex/implied masturbatory stuff could've made for a possible weird theater experience. Man, that Scarlet has a hot voice. Joaquin is a bit of beating for me. The mustache and wearing his pants too high didn't help.

The Monuments Men - Based on a true story of seven museum curators and art historians, who went to Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from the Nazis - who had orders to destroy the art as the Reich fell. It was as dull as it sounds. I really wanted to like it. The cast and a handful of funny moments saved it from bombing.

I saw it at the theater in Northpark mall. Did you know you buying seats at their theater is like a sporting event? I guess that's cool except that it is really dark and hard to see the numbers. It was a well behaved crowd tho. We ate at Green House Market right over by the theater. It was delicious. There was a scene in the movie when they were like "fuck you, doves" when some birds got in their way. I laughed. Here is an irl fuck you ducks story: Yesterday morning, I took the 2 new pups to White Rock Lake for a long walk to wear their bitch asses out. There were runners and cyclists everywhere. When I was leaving Lawther was very congested and stressful. My focus was on all the runners and cyclists and the car tailgating me so I didn't see the duck until I was right on him. I heard him thumping about the undercarriage. It sounded like a shoe in the dryer. I checked the rear view mirror and there were feathers in the air and he was ascending straight up, as if to fly away. Whew, he lived. Then the tailgater hit him again for good measure. I have hit pigeons and grackles before while driving and felt no sorrow. I have run over squirrels and possums and snakes and gotten a rush over their deaths. I got no joy from hitting the duck. I've always liked ducks. I have even fed them bread. I'll probably go back today and look for him.

Feeding bread to ducks is bad for them. It's the equivalent of junk food. It makes them fat and malnourished and hampers their ability to fly and evade predators. It also makes them more aggressive towards humans. Feed them cut up grapes instead. Science.

Does that go the same for turtles? Can a turtle get fat?

The pants were distracting, but I thought Joaquin Phoenix nailed it. This is my favorite movie I've seen in a while.

The Raid 2 -- Much more complex and convoluted than the original, which was one of the best action movies in recent years. Where the first dealt strictly with a raid on an apartment building over the course of a few hours and featured a mixture of machine guns and martial arts, the new movie is a sprawling story featuring prison gangs, warring mafia families, and takes place over several years. I still prefer the original but this one still kicks a lot of ass and is better than any action movie I've seen recently. It's far less gun play and more martial arts, but includes a car chase as well. Some crazy camera work makes it even better. There was one shot I was trying to figure out how they did until I found this:

One cameraman is disguised as the front seat.

I had never heard of the Raid movies so last night I watched The Raid after reading your post. (yes, I have Netflix) Boy howdy, it was good. I just wanted you to know that, Diello.

Snowpiercer -- Quality sci-fi flick. Dark, bleak, and intense. It has a fable-like quality to it that you just have to believe what what little remains of humanity is aboard a train that never stops and never slows down due to an "eternal engine." This is straight up a class-struggle/revolt story as the poor people at the back of the train rebel against the richies at the front. So Republicans will hate it. They can go back and watch that Marky Mark army movie for the 12th time. What sets this apart is how non-Hollywood it is. Decisions are made that wouldn't be made in any other movie. There is no love story at all. Tilda Swinton gives a completely over-the-top performance but it's awesome.

Highly recommend. It's in theaters but also already on-demand. It's a high budget movie, but not one for everyone so the Weinsteins kinda buried it. Getting lots of great reviews. So watch it. Or not. Fuck you. Die.

We're the Millers - I thought hoob was just being an old man about this. But he was right. It's not funny. 2 stars out of 5 and that's being generous.

The Musers have discussed this movie a couple of times lately. One of the hosts thought it was funny and won't back down. I think it was Georgie.

It had a few funny moments, but I agree with somey's rating.

Boyhood -- As good as everyone says it is. 2 hours and 45 minutes with no real plot. I am a Linklater fanboy. He's the only one who can make these talking heads movies. People have interesting conversations that range from silly to deep and are always fascinating. See the Before trilogy. Boyhood is the 12 years leading up to Dazed and Confused essentially.

Fuck all that "if you like {insert type of movie here} then see this" shit. This movie is great.
