I guess I'm not a big enough dork to understand the significance of this scene and why it made everyone's Star Wars weenie go crazy.

Luke loses his hand and Annakin's lightsaber at then end of ESB. When he shows up in Jabba's palace in ROTJ, he has a new lightsaber. This is a scene that was cut right before he showed up at Jabba's. That's it.

There are several "famous" cut scenes from the trilogy. In ANH, Luke watches the initial battle between the Star Destroyer and the Tantive IV through his binoculars and then meets with his freinds, including Biggs Darklighter who later shows up in the final battle (a scene featuring Biggs was restored to the special edition release in 1997 but is largely moot without the original scene). Biggs tells them he has graduated from the Academy but is going off to join the rebellion. This is what starts Luke thinking about joining the Academy. There's also a superfluous sandstorm scene from ROTJ right after defeating Jabba where they discuss their next steps. Several stills from these scenes have been leaked but they've never been seen on video or DVD, at least that I know of.

At first I thought maybe this was some subplot that never developed because I remember later in the movie the Emperor comments on the light saber, but apparently the dorks are going crazy because, well because they are dorks and this is new Star Wars shit.

I didn't know about those other scenes. Was that binocular scene released on a dvd?

There's a subtle art to understatedly narrating a tornadic film that was totally lost on these fellas, plus I didn't even see no tornado.
