On the Jhonny Peralta signing.

Diamondbacks reliever (and union representative) Brad Ziegler was critical of rewarding a player suspended for PED use with such a contract. "It pays to cheat...Thanks, owners, for encouraging PED use. People really don't understand how this works. We thought 50 games would be a deterrent. Obviously it's not. So we are working on it again.'

I'd rather have Choo than Haren if it's either/or, no doubt. But his L/R splits scare me a bit. I also don't think the #5 starter is a huge need, but I do like Haren more than most people do. I'm rooting for Colby, but I don't see it.

My opinion of Haren is that I hope the Angels sign him.

Why? I hear Haren's declining, but the advanced stats don't say that.

Haren - 3.67 xFIP, 8.01 K/9, 1.64 BB/9, 70.3 LOB %, 13.0 HR/FB %, 36.0 GB %
Ogando - 4.64 xFIP, 6.21 K/9, 3.54 BB/9, 80.8 LOB %, 8.7 HR/FB %, 40.7 GB %

If it means losing out on another hitter because of money, I completely understand choosing Ogando. But if it's 1 vs 1 and nothing else on the team is affected, Haren wins, especially on a one year deal, and Ogando goes to the pen. If Colby works out, great, but he signed a minor league deal and has never been that great. I'd be willing to give Tepesch another chance for sure, as he seemed to be as "unlucky" (LOB % and HR/FB %) as Haren last year, maybe even moreso. plus he's 25.

Is it just the money you don't like?

To me 10 mil is worth it considering how unlucky he was last year. Especially on a 1 year deal. There is no such thing as a bad 1 year deal, unless it precludes you from signing someone else. If we knew what the true budget was, then I guess we could analyze it better to see how much $ they have left. I will say that I highly doubt he would have signed with Texas for only 10 m. I think it's a great signing for LAD though.

Well there is a vesting option of 180 innings that steamer projects him to reach. The $ amount for the option is unknown but it's probably in the 10 to 12 range.

Prince Fielder batting third and Beltre in the cleanup spot. Works for me. Elvis in the two spot is the question mark. His bat was too inconsistent last year to maintain that spot.

Does my memory serve me correctly in that the lineup struggled more when Kins wasn't batting first? Who gets the honor now? Elvis would have been my first choice but I think they slumped with him there last year. How about Martin?

BA OBP
Elvis Andrus 274 339
Craig Gentry 280 355
Leonys Martin 254 306

I always thought that the lineup performed better when Martin led off, though I've always thought Gentry was underutilized with his speed and ability to bunt.

All 3 can bunt. Leonys is naturally the best at bunting for hits because he's a lefty. I read somewhere yesterday that Leonys gets the first crack at leadoff. But if they were to sign Choo, I bet that goes out the window.

I think Gentry benefitted from a platoon bump last year. I wouldn't mind him leading off against lefthanders but I doubt Wash would do that. He the type to just roll with the same guy leading off regardless of who is pitching.

It's official: JD is getting rid of all of the white players. I can't even identify with this team anymore.

it looks like they have it set up like a newspaper or something over there now where non members can post but it has to await mod approval and you have to enter an email address and one of those barely legible passwords to prove you're not spam. In short, yes, they're dead, and they appear really desperate.

20 million is now the max a team can pay for a posting fee. If there are multiple 20 million bids, the player in question can sign with any of the teams.

Agreed, but any team with any kind of $$ would be crazy not to put up the max fee, just to kick the tires.

I think it would only take 8/200. Nobody that hires Jay-Z as an agent would want to play in Seattle.

Glad the Rangers didn't do it.

And Jay Z left 60 mil on the table.

I hate to see him go but he's gonna be forgotten up there. Maybe he'll be their lone all-star rep 3-4 years then get traded. The M's will still never finish any higher than 3rd in the West.

By mid-day Friday, Seattle had heard that some team bid nine years and $225 million for Robinson Cano, so the Mariners upped their bid to $240 million and 10 years before apparently realizing the initial bid had come from themselves, too.
That dastardly Mystery Team at it again.

Grant Brisbee, who first caught this, thinks it has the ring of apocrypha. But it's not inconceivable, right? The M's offer Cano something shy of nine/$225M. It gets reported everywhere that Cano has nine/$225 on the table. Wires are crossed, the Mariners are convinced that someone's offered it to Cano even though it's their original offer misreported, and decide to beat it.

The Rays are shopping Joyce looking for LH power. Ship them Moreland and sign Mike Morse Or Corey Hart for the DH. I would be happy with that.
