Planning on spending a couple of dias in New York sometime in Feb. Any places/things you guys recommend me going/not going to?

O'Hara's Pub
120 Cedar St. (Greenwich St.)
New York, NY 10079
(212) 267-3032

Its next to "ground zero". I recommend the Irish Stew.

Also check out the memorial of 9/11 at the #10 firehouse
1 Liberty Plz # 20
New York, NY 10006-1404
(its right around the corner from O'Hara's)

I'll second the recommendation of seeing the firefighter's memorial at 10 House. It's a very moving memorial. If you're lucky, they'll have the doors open and you can see the memorial to the firefighters from that firehouse that died.

Take the Staten Island ferry if you want to see the Statue of Liberty for free and you don't want to spend half a day doing it.

Don't be scared of the subway. Taxis are a waste of money unless you're going somewhere in Harlem or the Bronx and you don't know exactly where you're going. Get a concierge subway map from a hotel and you'll be set.

If it wasn't so damn cold, I would tell you to walk Central Park. What I enjoyed most about the city was just walking around and seeing the neighborhoods, the buildings, and the people. There's a lot of touristy shit you can throw money at, but I wouldn't do 99% of it again on a second trip.

As for restaurants, avoid all the chains around Times Square. 9th Ave. and the adjacent side streets from Chelsea up to the south end of Central Park are lined with good places to eat. A couple of specific recommendations:

Tom's - in Morningside Heights near Columbia - the exterior of the diner from Seinfeld. Good breakfast.
Chelsea Square Restaurant at 23rd and 9th Ave.
Galaxy Diner at 46th and 9th Ave.
If you're looking for cheap/quick breakfast or lunch, try Pax Deli. There's a few around Times Square and one near the big Macy's store.
Go to Little Italy and try a restaurant there. It kind of sound Disneyesque, but that was one of my favorite areas of the city.

I heard I shouldn't expect to see any smiling faces there. I heard the locals are assholes. That true? Sounds like my kind of town. Did you guys fly over there? La Guardia I take it? How'd you get from the airport to Manhattan?

depends on your definition of an asshole.
Mine is some dipshit who dawdles and takes his dear sweet time checking out in a self check out lane in the grocery store. Also, any stranger who wants to small talk.
If that's your idea of an asshole too, you'll do fine there.
If your idea of an asshole is someone who looks like he's in an unjustified rush, and by golly, won't stop to shoot the shit with ya, welp. Good luck.

Eh, what Walt said. I ran across more than my share of friendly people. Even had people stop and help when they saw me looking at a map.

Yep, flew into LGA. That's the one time you'll need a taxi or car service. There's a cheap shuttle that runs from the bus terminal on 42nd, but the clientele always looked a little shady to me.

That's good, cause I'm not going there to be anyone's friend. I'm going there to fuck shit up.
