Back on topic: My oldest daughter turned 20 yesterday. She doesn't have a job that provides health insurance. Obviously she can't pay for personal insurance. If something serious happens to her, her only real option right now is to go to Parkland.

You can't convince me that this is the best our country can do.

Convince me why I need to pay for her insurance.

If she was in school full time, she could still be claimed under your insurance for a few more years.

If its a case of money, maybe she should lay off the smokes.

Can't you get coverage from Unicare for about $125 a month? That's less than most people pay for car insurance.

She could hook up with Sean Bass. I bet he has a good plan.

I should clarify. I'm not for a 100% govt run healthcare system where the taxpayer has to foot the bill for everyone. I do think that it needs to be regulated. Right now it's out of control. Something as necessary as healthcare shouldn't be priced to where only the very well off can afford it.

I love free enterprise and capitalism, but there are a few cases where the need of the many outweigh the want of a few.

I'll agree that there are issues with the healthcare system in this country, but ^that^ is bullshit. I'm far from well off and I can afford healthcare. And I think there are plenty of people in the middle class that can afford it.

I'm about to go spend around $900 at 1:30 to see a Rheumatolgist. That'll probably include about 15 minutes of his time and a half an hour of the lab techs time for the blood work, and the cost of a stamp and paper to send me the results. Most insurances don't cover pre-existing conditions. Healthcare seems bits out of whack to me.

Are you referring to your employer provided plan? I'm talking about healthcare for people that aren't lucky enough to work for someone that has decent healthcare benefits, if any.

Speaking of which, get this: We have benefits through my wife's work. We pay a little less than 300/mo for "Plan B". That same plan (practically) with the same provider through my work runs around 800/mo. Obviously her employer pays more for the plan than mine does. If for some reason my wife lost her job and I had to pick up the tab, we would be in a world of hurt pretty quick.

Again, there are plenty of people who are not "very well off" that have insurance. I'm not saying healthcare isn't expensive, but saying that only the rich and famous can afford it is ridiculous.

your main point , overall, seems to be that anyone can get decent health coverage, even if they work for someone like Wal Mart or somesuch.

That is not even close to what I'm saying. I'm refuting Gam's assertion that "only the very well off can afford it." That's as extremist as suggesting that anyone can get decent health coverage, even if they work for someone like Wal Mart or somesuch.

Well, that was a response to something else Gam posted and I posted that before he made his comment about the well off. You see, Walt, the forum lays posts out in chronological order of the time they were posted.

I was offering up Gam a suggestion, not making some point about that being the answer to all of healthcare woes. I've had friends that use Unicare and, while it isn't the best coverage, it keeps away from the crack whores and meth lab burn victims at Parkland.

you are probably better off just socking away $125 a month and using it to pay for your healthcare costs
