I am feeling no emotions, based on Desmond signing with Colorado.

What do you think someone like him is worth? 14ml/yr doesn't sound awfully high these days.

I agree with Fruit's comment. Desmond didn't hit well in the last half of the season. Interesting that the Rocks want him to play first base. Of course he will do great at it.

I love the guy, but the Rangers did the right thing here.

Jose Bautista is shopping for a team. He reached out to the Orioles. And their GM said this, according to a journalist:

Duquette: "We told (Bautista's) agent that we are not interested because our fans don't like him."

Oh dear me.

I'm assuming Desmond gave up $/year for more years. I would have been okay with the Rangers signing him for 2/30 or 3/48. 5 years is a long time for a guy that's shown some bed shitting tendencies.

Joey Bats ends up in Anaheim at some point or there's no justice in the world.

Reading with interest about the Blue Jays' interest in trading for Andrew McCutchen, whose production went down last year. I was going to laugh, then I remembered what the Rangers center field situation is. Yikes.

I guess I should just trust in JD.

Depending on the price, I wouldn't hate it. 1 year with a team option. He's only 1 year removed from a 5.8 season and 30 isn't old. I bet he rebounds offensively.

But he's not really a CF anymore, if he ever was. I'd imagine they'd want something cheaper and better on defense. I also don't imagine Pittsburgh is giving him away. My guess is you're safe.

A Newberg Report arrived in my inbox today. Included in this report was the fact that the Mariners have never made the playoffs in the 12 years that King Felix has pitched in the majors. I had no idea. Damn.

It's about 6 years late but I don't hate the signing. That said he'll probably pull a sphincter muscle in spring training and have to sit out the first 4 months of the season.

It's a reasonable deal. Every team needs a 5th starter. The Rangers have lots of them.

Advanced stats show he was about a run per 9 innings unlucky last year, but that 8.27 K/9 came out of nowhere.

I thought of Junior first, as well. Gam second.

This deal has far more potential upside than the Cashner deal at a much cheaper price.

I'm going all in on the Yu fiasco. Yu was a huge fan favorite and a good face for the franchise. Plus he's at the top of the heap at his position (WS not withstanding). He puts butts in seats. He's OUR ace, not someone we picked up from another team. He's the kind of player that you actually overpay for because the ROI is hella higher than someone like Gomez, Bush, or even Nap. Call me a FB fan I don't give a shit. It was a terrible decision to let him go.

Apparently this was already known by all the teams going into this

Also, Greg, the rangers are in the exact same position as they would be if they didn't trade Yu. He was always going to test the free agent market. JD would have been a dumbass not to trade him.

How much money?

I realize Greinke is a better value at 4/138.5 than Choo at 3/62, but that's 76.5m Texas would be losing that they could do something else with, and then give Arizona money on top of that? I mean if it doesn't affect any other potential signings, I'm all for it, but it just seems like it's prolonging a bad contract for another year.

I'd rather sign Darvish if he's interested, who is younger than Greinke and probably wouldn't demand 34.6 AAV. He'd probably demand an extra year though, and you're still stuck with Choo in that scenario. God, I was so fucking excited when they signed Choo.

I guess if you're treating Choo like a sunk cost, the deferred money for Greinke about matches Choo's remaining contract. So you're paying Greinke 4/94ish (+ whatver you have to give to make the deal happen), which is much more friendly than what Darvish will get, and just eating 20m per over 3 years since you're not expecting Choo to do much anyway. He's still a ~1 win player, which is not totally useless, but Gallo and Calhoun need those ABs.

I also think the door is closer to closed than the Rangers do. I would actually lean towards sell phase.

:babyarm: this is what I was thinking. plus I think greinke might age well and he was a 5 win player last year

It was a PR hit. At least for me!

And doesn't the home team have a rights that make it easier to keep someone?

They have a 5 day exclusive negotiating window (that no big name FA ever signs in), but if you're thinking of Bird rights, that's the NBA. Named after former NBA legend Larry Bird.

I can see why they named it Bird rights, since there's a lot of people named Larry.

There is also the qualifying offer angle, which *could* dissuade teams from signing a player who received the qualifying offer from the "home team", because the signing team would lose a draft pick. But it doesn't seem to have much effect.

It's easy to identify the people that started following the Rangers circa 2010. They all shit on JD for the same inane reasons because they have no memory of how bad the team sucked before he got here.
