Less than three months in, and Apple has already sold three million iPads. That's a pretty impressive number, definitely bolstered by the tablet's recent international release. In fact, Apple's sold a million iPads in the last three weeks alone.

still think the iPad is going to be a failure?? orange. silver.

I admit I underestimated the power of the Collective. So again, how do you like YOUR iPad? Surely you don't waste all of your time reading and posting about something you don't own. The last food on a plate is called a dilver.

I'm guessing the Apple store doesn't take the Lone Star Card or they won't let him trade in Colt 45 bottle tops.

Silly bigboy. Negroes steal things.

The iPad sales weren't a surprise: In late June, Apple announced that it had sold 3 million tablets in the first 80 days of availability. Apple is selling approximately 1.1 million iPads per month, according to Apple's figures, putting it on a pace to sell almost 10 million tablets by year's end.

In the quarter that closed June 26, Apple sold 8.4 million iPhones, down 4% from the 8.75 million it sold the first quarter, but up 61% from the same period last year. Mac sales, however, set a record of 3.47 million, up 33% over the same quarter in 2009 and trumping the 3.36-million mark of the previous bestselling quarter, the final three months of last year.

CNBC reports that the iPad has become the most quickly adopted non-phone consumer electronics product in history, topping the DVD player, which shifted only 350,000 units in its first year on the market. Apple sold over 300,000 iPads in its first day, and took just 28 days to reach one million units sold.

iPad sold three million units in the first 80 days after its April release and its current sales rate is about 4.5 million units per quarter, according to Bernstein Research. This sales rate is blowing past the one million units the iPhone sold in its first quarter and the 350,000 units sold in the first year by the DVD player, the most quickly adopted non-phone electronic product.
While many products have quickly reached sales into the millions of units, Bernstein appears to be focusing on consumer electronics categories, where the iPad has seen unusual success as the launch product in a segment as it has been jumpstarted by its connection to the rest of Apple's iOS ecosystem.

Perhaps more interesting is Bernstein's observation that the iPad is set to become the fourth-largest consumer electronics category in 2011 with over $9 billion in sales.

At this current rate, the iPad will pass gaming hardware and the cellular phone to become the 4th biggest consumer electronics category with estimated sales of more than $9 billion in the U.S. next year, according to Bernstein. TVs, smart phones and notebook PCs are the current three largest categories.
Bernstein's Colin McGranahan also suggests that the iPad is likely to be "cannibalizing" even TVs and digital cameras, noting that customers who make $600 iPad purchases are likely to delay purchases of other electronics due to financial considerations.

Ya ya ya, I already admitted defeat on the damn thing. I'm very curious how the iPad2 will sell, though. I still think the majority of the sales so far was just the crazed Apple fan "omfg i must haz it Steve says itz teh bommmmmmmmmmmmmz!!#!" reaction. Now that the things are collecting dust I wonder how quick they will be to upgrade. I also don't think other "pad" devices will do very well. I just don't see it as a big market. Of course, I'm old n shit.

btw, since when are consoles not "electronic devices"? The gameboy sold a million units in the first few weeks, too. Xbox 360 and Wii did very well also. Sounds like someone is writing their own history.

wouldn't backpedaling be me saying that I knew it would sell all along? I really thought this would tank. I still can't figure out why so many have sold outside of it just being the "next big thing" from Apple. Like I said, the true test will be when they release the next generation pad. Also I want to see if RIM, Palm and MS can dent this market if in fact there is a market to dent.

What in the hell would make you think that it would be anything other than a huge hit?

For one, the price. Unless this is going to get subsidized on ATT for 2 year contract, it may be a tough sell for someone to fork over another $850 only one year later. If it IS subsidized, people may hesitate on getting into another 2 year contract for just a media player. The wifi only model is $600, but that's still a lot of money for an annual purchase.

Apple will include the dual cameras so you can video chat, and that will definitely spur sales. Whether it will be enough to sell another 4 million remains to be seen.

The 4.19 million iPads Apple sold in the third quarter is a huge number, surpassing Mac sales even though they themselves were up 27% over last year. Even hugerer: 14.1 million iPhones in those three months alone. That's nearly double what they sold in the fourth quarter of 2009.
