My wife told me it's time to replace the backyard fence. It is 12 years old. She thought I was going to do it, until I told her no. $4000 later

Today, we did yard work. Now that I have an able-bodied 11-year-old boy at home, he can mow the fuckin' back yard like I had to when I was his age. The rains really made that shit grow back there, I tell ya. Along the fence line at the far reaches of the backyard fence, it grows like a mug. There's a lot of crab grass in that section and it got out of control in recent weeks. Before he got started, I decided to give him a little help by doing the trim back there and knocking down some of the heavier patches with the weed whacker. I was zipping along the fence when a tiny body spastically spun from the tall grass and into a freshly-cut patch. Freaked me the fuck out. On inspection, I weed whacked the high holy shit out of a bird. I don't know what it was doing on the ground in the high grass in the first place. Maybe he was keeping the area clear of ticks for me, and while I appreciate that, it could've given me advanced warning. Its body was twisted and broken beyond repair, but it was still alive. I thought about doing the humane thing and putting it out of its misery, but I didn't have the heart. Another ride on the weed whacker or even a quick crush under my size 12s seemed too awful for me and gave me the heebie-jeebies. I thought about even letting one of our cats satisfy its bloodthirst on it but it too seemed too cruel for the poor thing. It's pretty much why I'm destined to be zombie fodder one day because I just don't have it in me to put you bastards down. So I got back to work and when I checked on it again after finishing the trim, it had expired. I got a shovel and put it in a trash bag. Its brethren were looking for it later. I didn't have the heart to tell them it was inside a trash bag in a garbage bin in the garage. Doesn't matter anyway since I don't speak bird.

I finally got to mow my backyard too this weekend but all I found in the tall grass was dog shit.

Our warshing machine is 7 years old, and yes it is a top load style. I said top, and then I said load. It is a GE. (GE stands for General Electric, fyi) Lately, after a load has been warshed, it keeps dripping and pooling in the drum. That's annoying. Do you know what causes this? I'm usually too proud to google but I made an exception because I don't want to give some jack off repair dude one iona of my money. I learned it is a mixer valve and there was a parts place just a few miles from me. It was shockingly easy to replace. Part cost: $52. It just finished its maiden warsh as I type this and is not dripping. Yay, me. :cheer2:

I will probably never buy a front load washer because of the maintenance horror stories I've heard about them. Our washer is approaching 17 years old and the only thing that's ever gone wrong is a clog in the water level sensor line. I would, however, think about the top loading washer without an agitator. We had one in a beach house we stayed in a few summers ago and it was bad ass.

We all have garage doors, right? Then I'm sure we all have garage door openers as well. State law requires those electric eye thingies no more than 6 inches from the ground to keep any kiddos or small critters from getting squished by a light aluminum door. I got a problem with mine, tho. From about 10am to 5pm the sun shines just right to disrupt that electric eye and the door won't close because it thinks a dumbass kid is in the way. You can override this by holding down the big button inside the garage til the door closes, but either someone has to do it for you, or you get to do it yourself if no one is home. I've tried blocking the eye with my own shadow and hitting the remote but it rarely works. The Texas sun is simply too powerful. Instead I have to use the big button and trudge thru the house to get back outside. It really plucks my banjo strings, man. So today I learned a new use for those depleted toilet paper rolls. They fit real nicely over the electric eye creating a tunnel to block out that ding-dang sun. Works like a champ. Since toilet paper rolls aren't much for weathering, I will head to The Home Depot soon for some more sturdy piping that can withstand rain and such. Problem = solved.

That is strange. I never had that problem with my south-facing garage doors, but I am not surprised by your experiences at all. Because automatic garage doors are a total bitch.

There are so many things that went wrong with mine in the 20+ years that I had them. Every time it fucked up and no matter how much the pain in the ass it was, it was still worth it. To have the damn thing close when I hit the remote controller as I backed out on my way to work was wonderful. You can quadruple dong that when it was raining.

We do. We have both cars, a fridge for beer, my tool chest, and a handful of lawn equipment that goes unused that I'll probably sell soon.

If you have a working mower, I might be interested.

I have a mower, but it doesn't appear to be working. I haven't used it since 2010 when I decided mowing was for the birds. I tried to get it started in winter 2013 so I could mow up dog poop, but I couldn't get it running. There are people who can fix that stuff, but I'm not one of them. You can have it free, but unless you know how to fix it, it's probably not worth your time.

I've got:
2 working fridges and a stand up freezer
my tool cabinet
an old entertainment center that serves as shelving for various crap
a washer and dryer left by previous owner (both work, they're just old)
a lawn mower left by previous owner (dunno if it works or not)
(I'll be giving the above two lines to the inlaws next month, hopefully)
My mother's old headboard and 2 night stands (they were in my storage unit, now they're in my house. they gotta go)
a decent 30" x 6' folding table with crap piled on it
a couple of hundred pounds of charcoal
built in shelves holding lawn equipment and other crap

I could probably fit the wifey's car in there if I shoved a bunch of crap to one side, but won't. Our garage is in the front of the house but doesn't face the street. We have a single lane driveway that curves into the garage, making it difficult to accomodate my 21' truck. It's easier for her just to park at an angle than try to negotiate in and out of the garage.

I like butter and sometimes jelly on my biscuits. Grape is good jelly, but if blackberry is available, man, stand back cuz I'm about to throw down some goodness. I also like sausage gravy.

You ain't never lied about the jellies. Do you know what else is good on biscuits? Honey. Honey is made by bees, btw.

Holy shit, I forgot about honey. I do like honey on biscuits. I also like it on a peanut butter sammich. I buy local honey because it's supposed to help with allergies.

I only like gravy on my biscuits. I'd rather have jellied toast than jellied biscuits. That probably makes me a socialist in cap's mind. I don't eat a lot of breakfast. Usually just coffee. I prefer the pb/honey combo to the pb/jelly combo.

Gravy all the way. I've gotten pretty damn good at making the gravy, so much so that whenever hamburgers are brought home there is a standing request to make gravy for the fries. This is one reason I am a fat ass, btw.

Popcorn. In my quest for movie theater quality popcorn I have invested quite a bit in hardware, top shelf kernels and industry seasonings. I make it 6 quarts at a time for me and the family to share (including the good puppies) and I end up eating probably half. :dep: Popcorn night happens quite often in our house, especially during baseball season.

I always thought popcorn was pretty healthy if you don't cover it in butter and salt. I can't stand popcorn, even when I go to the movies. I do like caramel popcorn, but only occasionally in small servings.

I like sorghum syrup on biscuits. Babe's has it on their tables and it is always what pushes me from being full to miserable when I eat there. Until finding it at Babe's, I had never seen anyone else use it outside of my family growing up. You can buy it at the grocery store, but it's usually pretty pricey and I just wait until my next trip to Babe's to partake.

We always had Karo syrup when I was a kid. That's a very questionable parenting decision.

When it comes to syrups, butter pecan is my favorite flavor. I always get that on my pancakes (also known as hotcakes, griddlecakes, or flapjacks.) It's also good on waffles.

I think that pancakes and waffles are good. Do you like French toast too? I sure do. I like butter on all of those as well. Sometimes people put powdered sugar on top of ft (French toast)

I'll sometimes make pancakes or waffles on the weekend. I always make way more than we eat and freeze the leftovers so the kiddo can eat them during the week. Waffles reheat very well in a toaster and pancakes reheat pretty well in the microwave.

My kids have put powdered sugar AND syrup on their french toast (I call it freedom toast). We put 'em to work after that and let 'em go til they crash. I used to eat chocolate chip pancakes at IHOP when I was younger and could process that stuff and could also stay up til 4am drinking. Sometimes we went to Denny's. Denny's had a better collection of loud, crude, drunken shitheads on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. I bet it was weird to work there.

I went to Waffle House once 20+ years ago. Again, it was about 3am. That's how we rolled back then. We were the only ones there aside from the waitress who was also the cook and probably the janitress as well. She disappeared for awhile (meth?) so we left cash on the table to cover the bill. As we were leaving she came back out and yelled at us for not paying properly at the register. That's my Waffle House story. The End

DIY videos on YouTube are invaluable. In the last few weeks I've repaired the master bathroom basin, replaced the wax ring in the half bath commode, replaced and rewired all the smoke alarms in the house. I know I've saved a shit ton of money with the plumbing work! Go YouTube!

Did you know you're supposed to replace your smoke alarms every 10 years? That's what the fire department says. Honestly, I suspect they got some special interest going on there, but I can't prove it. Anyways, my house is 13 years old and I haven't changed mine yet. I have 9 smoke alarms. That's right, 9! Changing them sounds like a big pain in the rump, so I'll put it off probably forever. You're supposed to change your batteries twice a year too. I don't do that either. I change them on a case-by-case basis when the power goes out at 3am and one beeps to tell you the battery is dead. I have a junk drawer full of those squareish batteries for just such an occasion. What's in your junk drawer?
