In honor of Tit trying to breathe life into the forum, I'm going to rally behind him and get some hot art opinions going. I'm going to go off of this list. Don't expect much.

Piero della Francesca, The Baptism of Christ

http://www.uic.edu/depts/ahaa/classes/a ... aptism.jpg

This painting dates back to the 1450s. They didn't have a lot of football on TV to watch so artists painted stuff for fun. You have John the Baptist sprinkling water over Jesus and he does it while standing on one leg for style points. Artists were pretty good so instead of drawing a v to depict a bird, Piero drew an actual dove and it turned out pretty good.

This is going to be fantastic!

Ted, could you lead a tour of the Kimball, after a stop at the bar of course, once you have
completed your quest.

Antony Gormley, The Angel of the North

I didn't start this blog because I had an appreciation for it or that I necessarily wanted to get into it. I did it cuz this place needed some posting so I figured I would join Tit in his quest to scratch things off of lists and learn a little along the way. In regards to the Angel of the North, I'm not quite sure what to make of this one. You could probably line up 100 different people in front of this thing and each one walk away with a different interpretation. I should point out it's 66 feet tall and 177 feet wide so this thing is huge. I think it's difficult to get a feeling from this piece when you can't take in it's hugeness. Sometimes I wonder more about what the artist was thinking when they create these kind of pieces rather than what I think of it.

They should've mounted it to a big ass lazy Susan so it could spin round and round in the wind.

They had football in the '90s, so I'm wondering why they wasted their time building this.

Masjid-i Shah (now Masjid-i Imam) Mosque (largely 1612-1630) Isfahan, Iran

What we have here is a dome ladies and germs.

It's clearly a terrorist training facility but some people also call it a mosque. It's found in Iran and has a bunch of mosaic tiles all over it.

Imagine the smell of the place 5 times a day when prayer is being held. If I were Muslim I would always be on the first row so that I don't have put my face near someone's dirty feet.

Not to nitpick, but some of us are here for the art discussions, not the architecture.

That immediately made me think of the painting on Eli's living room wall in the The Royal Tenenbaums.

This is JMW Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway

The painting depicts an early locomotive of the Great Western Railway crossing the River Thames on Brunel's recently completed Maidenhead Railway Bridge.

If you look closely there is a small boat at the bottom left of the painting. With a magnifying glass you can see it has two dogs in it, one facing east and the other west and an old guy with a nice head of white hair with the look of "what do you want from me"?

Currently on display at the National Gallery in London.

Too frickon cool. I like looking at the faces of these you men and wondering what their dreams were, what they left behind, etc. Interesting stuff for sure.

Somewhere there is a gallery of colorized old photos. It's really cool. Some of them look like they were originally shot in color. I'll try to dig up a link to it soon.
