That's right. It's time to save this forum again with a big, dumb, stupid, endless thread. I'm going to listen to every album listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Chances are I will die before finishing so everyone can wager on which album it is that kills me.

Here's the list. I'll do this in chronological order.

There's a dude on Spotify who has most of these in one huge playlist. Feel free to listen along.

BTW, they also have one of these for movies, which Diello would do if he loved the forum as much as I do.

I'm looking forward to this. There's a lot of good stuff on this list, but there's a handful of crap as well. Have fun.

1. Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours

This album reminded me of two things, one bad and one good. The bad: It reminds me of the crap my parents listened to when I was growing up. They'd never touch anything as cool as Sinatra. They were into Engelbert Humperdinck and BJ Thomas, et al. They loved them some sappy ballads. It wasn't like they were all romantic and shit, they were just kinda square about it and didn't care for anything too threatening. They fell in line with hippie fear after the Manson murders and pretty much stuck with crooners forever after that. That leads into the good memory: This album reminds me of sitting around on a cold, quiet winter evening, doing whatever I did during winter evenings as a kid, and hearing my parents easy-listening tunes lull us into a relaxing comfy zone. The songs are all the same: ballads about lost love, and they blended together until I didn't know how many songs into the album I was, but they also transported me to a happy place. Thanks, Frank.

Weird thing about the free version of Spotify is the forced ads. While listening to Sinatra, I was interrupted by the new single from Mastodon. Some rapper dude just butted into Elvis.

2. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant shit to me. I don't know about being racist, but I never heard what was so great about him. My mom loved him and played his music a lot. If I was being a pain in the ass, she could always put Elvis on and I'd go elsewhere. When he died, she mentioned it to me and she seemed really sad about it. The 6-year-old me said, "Good!" and went outside to throw rocks at stop signs. You best realize it now, kids: One day Fred Durst will die and your little pantshitters won't be sensitive to your feelings about it. It's a hard, cruel world. But back to Elvis...I can handle Elvis now when he's rockin' out. There's no denying that "Blue Suede Shoes" is awesome, and he does a good version of "Tutti Frutti" here, even if it's not as good as Little Richard's. When he starts his croonin', however, I'm out. I hate that tremolo thing he's famous for. And when he tries a falsetto during "Blue Moon", it's really bad. He didn't sell all of these songs like Sinatra could or the old blues guys he supposedly ripped off. Too often I pictured Val Kilmer in Top Secret! singing to me. Not that that's a bad thing at all.

3. The Louvin Brothers - Tragic Songs of Life

I'm no authority on country music, but I know this is the real shit. Any fans of the today's calculated, image-conscious country music needs to go back and listen to the old stuff. It's not all about patriotism and your truck. Screw the hard-workin' man. Old country music is about flawed people. It's about being lonely because you fucked up. It's about looking for Jesus in a bottle of booze. It's about reaching the end of your rope and picking up a gun. It's not my favorite kind of music, but it feels real. Next time you're watching the ball game and some douche in a big cowboy hat sings about how you need a new truck, give this album and spin and watch all that focus group phoniness wash away.

4. Louis Prima - The Wildest!

I don't know if it's the wildest, but it's still pretty darned wild. I enjoyed this crazy swing band stuff. It fits right in with stormin' the wasteland in Fallout 3, listening the Three Dog and throwin' down on super mutants. It's weird hearing a guy sportingly sing about punching a bitch and the singer chick just brushes it off. Those were different times. Also, his version of Just a Gigolo kicks David Lee Roth's version's ass. I always got a kick out of Diamond Dave's rendition, but he didn't try to do anything new with it. Even the scat singing is copied syllable-for-syllable. Prima's got a cooler voice, too. Plus he can play a horn.

5. Fats Domino - This Is Fats Domino

Here's a guy I can't believe is still alive. He's going straight to the top of next year's dead pool list, which pretty much ensures him another year on this planet. That said, I enjoyed this album because he didn't bother with a lot of slow bluesy songs, instead playing a bunch of fun R&B stuff. Sure, "Blueberry Hill" is a slow stroll, but the rest are fun little upbeat butt shakers. I liked "Blue Monday" the best. Fats makes good music. I hope he lives until next year.

:babyarm:

I would have thought he'd die at 40 like everybody else. I used to have 78 rpm records of Fats' stuff. "I'm in Love Again" was on it.

When I played oldies music I was totally sick of nearly everything we did. But I never got tired of Fats.

6. Duke Ellington - At Newport

This one was alright. It's good jazz, but it didn't grab me much until the end during "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" which is a huge 14-minute piece featuring Paul Gonsalves blowing his brains out on his saxophone. Reading up on it, it's a transcendent moment in jazz. Knowing very little about jazz, I'll say it made me take notice and I really dug it. I'm keeping that track in my regular rotation.

Though it didn't take me to a happy place, I liked this album better than the first Sinatra simply because it was jazzier and more fun. I never listened much to him, but I like what I've heard.

8. Buddy Holly & the Crickets - The "Chirping" Crickets

I've always liked Buddy Holly more than Elvis. For starters, he wrote a lot of his own stuff from the beginning, and there's just an honesty in this dorky-looking guy that's more endearing. Elvis had the sneer and over-tremolo, but Buddy Holly had no gimmicks and was better for it. Sure, virginal Fifties girls didn't want to fuck him like they wanted to do with Elvis, but I'm not a virginal Fifties girl and, frankly, I'd fuck Buddy Holly first, there, I said it. Had he died sometime after I was born, I probably would've been somewhat sad about it.

9. Cunt Basie - The Atmic Basie

I'm starting t appreciate jazz a little mre, r maybe it's nt that I'm appreciating jazz mre but appreciating straight up rck music a little less. What the jazz guys culd d was phenmenal. These are such cmplex arrangements and they fly right thrugh them. Anytime smone ges n abut hw such and such rck dude is an amazing musician, realize that mst jazz dudes culd play rings around him. 10. Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners

Remember that thing I said earlier about jazz guys and complex arrangements? Multiply that by about 20 here. I have no idea what makes great jazz, but I couldn't identify a single time signature here and yet I didn't turn away from it. I can only imagine the kind of brain it takes to write something this crazy, with so many twists and turns, and still have it all make sense. Some might say it's music for crazy people. I think you need a certain kind of brain to interpret it. I don't got it, but I think I'd like to learn.

11. Sabu - Palo Congo

If you like tribal chanting over bongo rhythms, this album is for you. It's not terribly bad, probably groundbreaking as bongo music goes, but I kept feeling like this is the music heard right before the natives throw whitey into the boiling stew pot.

12. Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool

I've always wanted to check out Miles Davis, but never knew where to start. I guess this place is as good as any since it's straight-up bebop jazz. It's nothing too challenging, it sounds good, and your brain doesn't freak out when it hears all these crazy notes flying everywhere. Again, I don't know much about jazz, but this sounded good to me. Still don't know much about Miles Davis, but I think I'm ready for step 2.

13. Machito - Kenya

Basically, take the last two albums and combine them. This is jazzy bongo music. I have no idea what it has to with Kenya since it was made by Latinos and didn't have much jungle flava. It's more Miami Sound Machine than guys who played on Paul Simon's Graceland. That makes 3 instrumental albums in a row. I need me some vocals. Oh shit...

Anyone who doesn't like this music is high. Who cares if the dude is gay or he keeps doing that "Woooooooo!" shit all over the place, this music is fun and added some essential funk to the development of rock 'n roll. Mah nizzle was better than Elvis at this game, but he was too black and fruity to be embraced by innocent white girls. That's everyone else's loss. Little Richard = kickass!

15. Tito Puente - Dance Mania Vol. 1

When Tito Puente died, everyone said, "Oh, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's fabulous." The people who mainly said this were the people at On The Border, because if you've never knowingly heard Tito Puente before, you've at least heard a good imitation of him in every OTB commercial that has aired in the last 10 years. I find myself suddenly craving an Ultimate Fajita. I hope they still have that there. It's more food than you need, but it's really good. I also really like their salsa. One time they tried to sell me on a watermelon margarita, but I didn't partake. For some reason watermelon gives me headaches.
