I went for my 6 month follow up yesterday after going for the first time in 8 years. The scraping and whatnot wasn't too bad, but my gums bled like crazy and the hygienist decided to take measurements of the gingivitis involvement. "Taking measurements" is some secret code word for repeatedly stabbing the fucking hell out of the gum space between my teeth. It was murder. The dentists must be in cahoots with the electric toothbrush industry because they keep telling me that will fix this whole issue with my gums.

FWIW, I got an electric toothbrush and without me saying anything the hygienist commented on how much better my gum tissue was not long after I got it.

Which one did you go with? They push Sonicare, but those damn things are expensive.
I like the Oral B better. It has a round head and brushes in a circular pattern. I overspent on the first one~like 70 bucks and it lasted about 3 years. I just replaced it with a $20 model from walgreens about a year ago and the only difference is the charger is smaller and it came w/no extra replacement heads. The sonicare head just kinda vibrates side to side.

I still use a regular toothbrush because it's the only exercise I get.

the smaller the better. they are measuring in mm how far your gums have receded. And it goes higher than 5. :dep:

Oh, but it's using the metric system, therefore it's invalid.

A couple of days ago I had a tooth crack pretty much in half. I got in to see the dentist today. It's gotta go and I'm getting a partial. While they were taking the mold of my teeth the tooth went ahead and broke all the way. I've got a slab of plaster plugging the hole until I get my partial next week. fml

You know all those horror stories you hear about the dentist? And why people are scared to go? I experienced that today.

Holy fuck I thought I was going to pass out in the chair. The doc was having to shoot me up every half a minute as he went along but even then I felt quite a bit of pain. The tooth was so weak is kept breaking off. Every time it broke there was a traumatic jerk and my blood pressure shot through the roof. My shirt was half soaked with sweat by the time they were finished.

That was for one tooth. Only 28 more to go. :dep: fml

That's been crossing my mind as a cheaper alternative. My mother got them a few years back and hates them. She's pretty adamant about me trying to keep what I have. My Dad got them in his early 30's. Between those 2 one would think my teeth don't have a chance.

I always hated flossing because it'd make my gums bleed, so I'd do it once then never again for about a year. I'm doing it maybe twice a week now and it's amazing how easy it is when you do it regularly. No more bleeding. No more getting the floss stuck between the teeth. It's real easy, man.

Used strands of floss are surprisingly hard to throw into a trash can.

I experienced that last night. I held it from one end with the bottom about an inch over the lid of the wastebasket. I let it go but it stuck to my finger for a second which fucked up its falling trajectory and it landed on the floor. It's still there. The wife'll clean it up.

Those floss tools are pretty cool and a lot easier to work with than just plain ol floss.

My dental practice changed hands since my previous visit. After the cleaning, the new guy game in and sat down and before speaking he turned on the overhead light which shone brightly in my face. He brazenly introduced himself with "Good morning I'm your new dentist, John Holmes." His eyes locked onto mine and dared me but I held it together.

Had a follow-up cleaning today and they gave me a lot of shit for not flossing. I let it slide without a fight because the hygienist was really cute and I had hopes for a make-out session. But then she tore my gums all to shit with her drill and scraper thing, and no chick wants to make-out with you when your mouth tastes like blood so it was a total fail morning for me.

They also want to replace another old filling. I told them I'll get back with them on that.

My hygienist gave me grief about flossing too as if her wiping all that floss gunk on my paper towel bib wasn't a big enough hint.

Long story short (and I think repeated on this forum).

I have heart disease, which includes cardiomyopathy (not good) and mitral valve prolapse (also not good, but somewhat common).

Add in an infection from not taking care of my teeth, and something getting into my gums and they start beeding and getting infected. In comes endocarditis, in the form of a blueberry sized infection that attaches itself to my fucked up mitral valve. Part of the infection breaks off and travels through my arteries and ends up lodged in my foot, which I thought was a broken foot.

This happens while traveling through Missouri at 80MPH with my kids and I in the car.

I thought I broke my foot somehow. Tests revealed what actually happened, and I was scheduled for emergency open heart surgery to have my infected valve taken out and a metal one put in. I had to wait for a week, while they had me on mega antibiotics to get me ready for the surgery. This whole time, the blueberry could have broken off and traveled to my brain and killed me or left me a fucking vegetable.

That could have been prevented with a few trips to the dentist.

There was a new hygienist today at the dentist office. She was like a thin Ann B Davis which was fine by me. She talked inncessantly which I didn't mind cause it kept my mind off the scraping and picking which was good because if the focus is on the former I can't always control how rebellious the tongue can get. After a while it was apparent that woven into her conversations were carefully crafted upselling techniques. It got to be a beating, 1st with some $20 mouthwash, then a Sonicare, and lastly replacing dated fillings with new tooth colored ones like the kids of today get. The dentist was worse. Real chirpy fuck at first then delved off into ominous dental terms with the hygienist regarding certain teeth calling them out by number. Then he took this wand camera tool through the mouf and took images which he showed on a large screen monitor attached to the overhead light. It wasn't something I really wanted or needed to see and frankly, I'm not 100% sure I'd want to French kiss me after seeing some of those silver filling shots outlined in bloody spittle. That said, I gotta get 2 wisdom teeth pulled and a filling replaced. Some chick at the billing station printed off an estimate which revealed a crappy dental plan. When she bent over the printer her v necked scrubs revealed some milky white c cups but i was kinda too bummed to enjoy them. New Moon on Monday
was on 1st wave in the car. Singing along lightened the mood.

The Sonicare is a good and worth the money. I bought one a few years ago and my dentist and hygienist both said my gum tissue is looking really good without me telling them I bought a sonicare. I find my dentist a little creepy but credit to him as he's never try to upsell me on anything or recommended any procedure I didn't need.

All dental plans suck unless all you need is a cleaning. They tried to upsell me on all sorts of shit too. It must be the new thing. Everything was gonna cost me $500 a pop out of pocket. For that price, I don't need my old fillings replaced with newer, fancier fillings.

I bought an Arm and Hammer Spinbrush at the first of the year. It cost about 7 bucks at Wal Mart and does pretty much the same thing as the Sonicare.

Gum tissue/receding line seems like the "you need a new air filter" of the dental world. She said everything was in the healthy 3mm range. The dentist looked at the photos, put on his teaching cap, told me to "open wide" and really put on a seminar for her as he poked and prodded with unncomfortable stretch force so he could pinpoint an area of 5-6mm, thereby increasing the need for me to rinse with their GingiMed oral rinse I suspect. The way he pulled on those gums, no way that prick doesn't have a wood ruler scar next to his groin area and tissue damage to his penis from a porky's inspired measurement from his youth.

My brother and both my uncles have had gum surgery so I don't think it's bullsh. They seemed pretty miserable when it went down so I have a healthy fear of gum disease.

Posting from the Dentist's office. The hygienist is like an 8 out of 10 and she always laughs at my jokes and rubs my jaw. I think she wants to make out, but there's no way after looking at my teeth. I have some type of gum infection. F me.

There's nothing more vulnerable unless on a chick forum somewhere lays on her back--legs in stirrups, with her world exposed to a gynecologist she fancies. "There's now way he'll want to cunnilingual me", she posts, "not after seeing this yeast infection."

Headed to the dentist in an hour for my twice yearly check-up. I remember as a kid my mom telling me to take care of my teeth as you only get one set. It doesn't hurt that my oral hygeineist is hot.
