Well this is odd. Normally I go through a pack of smokes in about a day but I was coughing and hacking so much over the weekend it took me 2 and 1/2 days to get through a pack. That pack was the last pack in the carton. Monday morning I had planned on buying another carton on the way to work but completely forgot about it until I pulled in the parking lot. As I threw down the butt from my last smoke on the asphalt and crushed it silent, a thought popped into my head... "how about that one?" As in: How about that one being the last one? It seemed to finally make sense.

So as of 8:05am Monday I am an ex smoker. Completely cold turkey: No patch, no gum (regular or nicotine) and no mind altering drugs. Just determination and sheer will power. I've had some cravings but nothing too crazy. It all has to do with attitude, I think. If I was trying to quit I think it would be a lot tougher. If I was trying to quit I don't think I would have made it even this far. But I'm not trying to quit, I quit. Not a tough decision really.

Now in a serious bolt of irony, I fully expect to be hit by a bus on the way to work tomorrow. :/

I've had friends tell me that it is harder to break away from smoking than some illegal drugs.

I hope it works out for you.

Gagree! Good luck Gam. I quit many years ago in a similar scenario. I used to smoke about a carton a week, but got a severe sore throat so the cigarettes tasted "funny." After a week I picked up the pack and started to light one when I realized I hadn't smoked in over 7 days so why start back?

The only time I missed the figs was when I was at the bar with a longneck in my other hand, but in time that passed.

Good luck. You can do it!

Thanks, fellas. Hey Ich, my mother told me my father quit similar to this way too. Good to hear it's a successful method.

The cravings I get are stronger than I thought they'd be. Most of it is the physical craving though, not the chemical. I can deal with it easily enough, the worse the cravings, the more pissed I am at being so dependent. The cigs don't have a chance.

Whenever I would go to the urinal and would hold my peepee, that's when I had cravings the most cuz I thought I was holding a cigarette. I mean no I didn't. I'm just saying. What?

Still smoke free. I really expected it to be harder than this. Some observations:

I expected to smell cigarette smoke on the clothes in the closet or the carpet or blankets or something. I kinda expected the whole apartment to stink, but it doesn't. I always thought people that don't smoke can smell it right away, but I guess I was wrong. I couldn't even smell it on coworkers that smoke. I was always self conscious of that but I guess I never had anything to worry about.

I'm still coughing a little. I think I'm over the sick, so I'm sure I'm still coughing from 20+ years of smoking. When I cough the crap up now it tastes like I licked an ashtray. That's a little scary, actually. Hopefully I'm down to the primer layer and it will stop soon.

My mother thinks I'm an idiot for not taking Wellbutrin(sp) or using the patch or gum or whatever. I don't understand that logic. If I don't have to use any of that stuff, then why bother? She's convinced in a month or so I'm gonna go nuts and smoke a carton in one night. My mother is weird.

My philosophy is if you have to use a crutch then you're not serious about quitting. I've done it before. I tried the patch and the gum and just figured I would slowly ween myself off of cigs. I didn't really want to quit but I knew that I needed to, so I was just gonna substitute the cigs for the patch and I expected to just quit while I wasn't looking. Didn't work. The cravings I would get were unbearable, and after a few weeks I was smoking as much as I ever was WHILE WEARING the patch.

This time the cravings have been a lot less intense. It's all in my head, I just know it. When the cravings come, I don't sit and wonder how long will they last, I call my smoking buddies and we go downstairs. They smoke, I don't. When we're done the craving is gone and I'm still smoke free. It's all in how you handle it. I'm trying to do the things I've always done, just without a cigarette. I have been drinking a lot more water, but that's it.

So the little smoker that could has made it to the end of his 6th day and all is good.

Just FYI, smokers do stink. You just can't tell yet but us non-smokers can smell you a mile away.

As of 8:05am this morning it's been 2 full weeks. Cravings come and go but this last week was a little easier than the first I think. The cravings are still as intense but there are less of them. Actually, I don't know if I am having true cravings, because I don't think I'm actually having withdrawals from the nicotine insomuch as I get really antsy sometimes and just have to get up and walk around. Sometimes when I take a sip of coffee it hits pretty hard too.

One of the cool benefits of not smoking is watching my savings account grow. With me and the wifey not smoking now we have an extra $200. Pretty sweet!

So good to know the people at GIML take their job seriously and are on the ball. What kind of fucking losers feel the need to moderate the internet to make sure no one is offended by someone's comments/beliefs? I bet they really feel they have an important responsibility to muddle through every post to make sure the folks at the Ticket are in no way offended by some comment. I feel like a loser ever talking about these douche bags.

I laugh at how they take the internet seriously. What's funny is the Ticket folks laugh at these people. They tell me. Yeah, I know Ticket people.

They laugh at them on the air. Last week B&D had mentioned something along the lines of how the lives of Bad Kitty and Big Unit would collapse if the forum suddenly shut down. It's pretty pathetic when the people you worship take a shit on you and you interpret it as some sort of affection.

Does this mean that my seedy stories of using Hot Wheels Track as a marital aid would not be appreciated over there? Why, what would be the point in posting?

So good to know the people at GIML take their job seriously and are on the ball. What kind of fucking losers feel the need to moderate the internet to make sure no one is offended by someone's comments/beliefs? I bet they really feel they have an important responsibility to muddle through every post to make sure the folks at the Ticket are in no way offended by some comment. I feel like a loser ever talking about these douche bags.

I laugh at how they take the internet seriously. What's funny is the Ticket folks laugh at these people. They tell me. Yeah, I know Ticket people.
I think Grubes took offense to the Carter jokes.
