So I didn't want to bog the movie thread with more comic talk, so I'll dump all my dork thoughts here.

The Ultimates is interesting in that it uses the current political state as the backdrop for the likes of Thors, the Hulk, and especially Captain America. Cap was made for WWII, to fight the Nazis. He wakes up in 2003 and finds he's unsure about the country he used to blindly fight for.

A few years ago, Neil Gaiman (who wrote the classic Sandman series) wrote a series for Marvel called 1602. He took the original Marvel lineup from the 60s and dropped them in 1602 Europe. The Mutants become "witchbreed", the Fantastic Four gained their powers by navigating their ship through the Saragaso Sea. Lotsa fun. But he mainly wrote it because he said he couldn't do villians destroying cities and taking over the world after 9/11.

But not Marvel itself. They go the other way and almost exploit it. And in what doesn't feel like a negative way. They get the Ultimates together, but they have no one to fight. So Bruce Banner decides to let the Hulk loose so they can fight him. He levels much of the city and kills almost a thousand New Yorkers. Marvel is all headquartered in NYC and has always used it as the homebase of their characters, instead of making up cities like Metropolis and Gotham, etc. They have the pulse to a degree.

Just a couple thoughts on Wanted. I really enjoyed the movie. Might be the most violent film I've ever seen. At least as far as mainstream American movies. Ichi the Killer would have something to say about being the most violent ever.

So the comic Wanted is based on is far more brutal. And it doesn't feature assassins. It's about a fraternity of supervillains. They've wiped the Earth of all superheroes, even the memory of them (it happened in 1986 they say, which coincides with DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths). But the main character is completely amoral. He shoots up a police station for fun. And rapes. A lot. In the end, he finds out that his father has left him millions of dollars. But he says he's tired of the life, that all the power isn't worth it. Fox (Angelina Jolie's character in the movie, who here looks like Halle Berry and is an analog of Catwoman) tries to change his mind when she realizes "you're fucking with me, aren't you?" He replies "Of course I am." He then fucks her and takes over the fraternity.

Oh, and there's no weavers or Loom of Fate in the comic. They made that up themselves.

But there are versions of other DC villains: Clay Face becomes Shit Head, Bizarro here is called Fuckwit, and Two Face is Johnny Two-Dicks complete with a second cock that controls his actions. Good times.

Kevin Smith on Watchmen:

I saw "Watchmen." It's fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching "Sin City" on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you'll come close to watching "Watchmen." Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can't come soon enough.

So if we haven't read the book we don't need to bother with the movie? Noted.

If you have the Iron Man DVD, go to the scene where Pepper walks in after the first big fight and he's trying to get his armor off. When the camera view switches to looking back at her, look at the left side of the screen on the table to see what Tony Stark works on in his spare time.

In the Hulk, it looks like someone is swinging through the buildings when Blonsky turns into the creature and starts tearing down the street. They swing from the top left of the screen. Many thought this was an allusion to Spider Man but it also may be Daredevil, which Marvel recently reacquired the rights to. Yet it is plain that the figure is in white, so that is unlikely too. It's probably simply a puff of smoke or trick of the camera, or better yet, it could be Moon Knight. And allegedly the picture in General Ross's office is a WWII picture of Steve Rogers. And there's speculation that the "freak thunderstorm" that allows the Hulk to escape is being created by Thor.

Good times.

The reason for that is Wanted was originally a DC pitch that Millar reworked and published as Wanted.

Also he wrote a series called "Chosen" which will have a sequel next year called "American Jesus". He also has a new "zombie" series called "Cross" which had maybe the most shocking single image in an American comic book in the last 20 years.
