The kid with the medal actually SENT it to the kid who should have won it in the first place. Good for him. Suck it, UIL.

A few years ago, the UIL instituted a set location for state championships in football. Before that, the coaches would negotiate where they'd play. The fiasco with HP a few years ago changed that. All other sports already had a pre-set location of the state championship.

Looks like the Death Star will be the site of football state finals for awhile.

http://highschoolsportsblog.dallasnews. ... hips.html/

Coaches from the other end of Texas don't like this rule, but it needed to be done. I can't believe I'm siding with the UIL on something.

This makes me shake my head. There are at least two 1-9 teams in the playoffs. Both are in 3A:

Pampa (1-9) vs. Lubbock Cooper

Diboll (1-9) vs. Fairfield

Numerous 2-8 teams are in. Also, there is a game where a 2-8 is playing a 4-6 team. I covered a game on Friday where a team was trying to win that second game and get in. They failed, and I was happy for them.

It is easy to blame the UIL for this, but actually this is driven by superintendents who vote for this sort of thing.

Until 1982, only the district champ advanced. I don't mind two teams going, but four? Fuuuuuuuuuuck that.

The UIL is changing up the names of districts. Six-man will be 1A, 1A will be 2A, and so forth up to the new 6A, which is what we used to call 5A.

Also from the UIL:

2014-2015 will also see the renaming of "zero week" in football. The weeks will be referred to as Week 1 through Week 11 rather than Zero Week through Week 10.

Interesting idea that I've never thought of. You see, I've always worked at 1A and 2A schools.

When I was a freshman in HS, Allen was in my district. In 2A. They kicked our asses, 49-0. One of my classmates was so terrified of them, he faked an ankle injury.

I agree with the idea of schools can't be too big or they have to split up. I don't think the TEA or UIL could pull it off, but I am in favor of it.

I have watched three games on FSSW this weekend and loved them. The idea of all championships being in one location and on TV was poo-pooed by a lot of coaches when it came down, but I love it and think it was a great idea.

A writer at ESPN, Gregg Easterbrook has started a shitstorm by penning an article about Texas High School football. In it, he states that black male athletes are less-prepared for college than black females, and he blames the year-round football mentality that he says exists here.

Unless someone changes their mind, high schools will go to the 40 second play clock next season. Currently, a 25 second play clock is used and the clock starts when the ball is put into play by the referee.

Many smaller schools have installed 25 second play clock systems on their fields. I saw a post by a coach that said he had a hard time getting it to work for 40 seconds.

Today is realignment day for football districts. The word comes down at 9:00 today, which is 10 minutes from now. Here is what the UIL website says right now:

Due to heavy traffic, the full UIL Web site, www.uiltexas.org will be unavailable immediately following release of the 2014-2016 alignments. The full site will return later in the morning.

That is no lie. That thing is locked up big time for about 20 minutes.

They just changed the number of A's. There is a 6A now.

One thing that surprised me is, Highland Park is in the biggest class now. There is a joke among coaches that in order to get the starting number for the largest class, take the number of kids that Highland Park has and add one to it.

I don't feel like starting a new thread for this, so I'll put it here.

Lots of talk about the end of the Celina vs. Argyle girls basketball game. Hansen ranted about it on TV. My take is odd.

I used to work with a parent of one of the Celina kids. This sonofabitch was a total douche. His kids were knuckleheads and they were a total pain in the ass who answered to no one. His wife, a colossal bitch that would drown if it rained on her. I really hated the whole family.

One year, he got mad at the principal for who knows what. To punish him, he would leave the lights to the gym on after practice, and then lock the door to the switch room so nobody could turn them off. What a prick. Unfortunately for his dumb ass, Hoob had a master key and used it to unlock the door and turn the lights off every single day. Oh, and I'd lock the door back so he'd have to unlock it in the mornings.

He did about a half-dozen other things that make me wish he'd EABOD.

Seeing his kid get cheated out of a trip to Austin made me really happy.

I have been to the boys state basketball tournament in Austin once. Once.

Never again. What a fucked up deal. Hotel prices are jacked off. I mean up. There is no place to park. The place is gridlocked all to be damned. It is amazing to me that a city so fucked up gets this amazing event that brings in so much money. It should not be this way.

So today, I read that the UIL is thinking about moving the boys and girls tournaments somewhere else. Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston are possibilities. It's about damned time.

It is almost a done deal. According to the Startlegram, the state basketball tournaments will be held at the Alamodome. I'm not crazy about that venue, but I am glad that it's not going to be in Austin.

Mart and Thorndale played a non-district game on Friday, which Mart won. It appears that things kinda got wild. So much so, that both schools have already made the decision to take that game off of the schedule next year. Both teams are 2A (formerly 1A). From reporter David Smoak:

For those asking Mart-Thorndale won't play in '15, Friday game was intense, got out of hand at times, better they don't play unless playoffs.

There is talk on Twitter about a week 10 game being postponed because of no officials.

There has already been some game dates changed earlier in the year because of the shortage of officials.

I don't understand why people are not willing to spend six hours of their day (or more, depending on the drive) to call a game. Three hours of that time are spent hearing rednecks yell "call it both ways!" or "I have some glasses that you can borrow, moron," all while making a hundred bucks.

Fuck a duck. I just saw a kid from Mineola back away from the opening kickoff like it was a punt. Yes, the other team jumped on it, then scored shortly afterwards. This is in the state championship.

I see this sort of thing every once in awhile. In junior high.

The worst thing about the State Title Games

Besides that I could not go this year.

When FOX has someone from the UIL in the booth and they tongue each other from head to toe telling each other what a great job they are doing, If the FOX Sport Girls were involved it might be okay but Mark Cousins and Craig Way? I'll pass.

The high school football playoffs concluded this weekend, and it is considered to be wildly successful.

People had predicted a few years ago that if it was all in one place, high school football would be ruined. The same people complained that if the games were on TV, that would ruin things, too.

Both opinions turned out to be wrong, and these people are dumbasses.

And then today, I had to witness a Twitter bitchfest from people complaining about having to drive to Dallas. More dumbasses. They are wrong and it is just killing them.

Dayum. LaMarque ISD has been ordered to close by the TEA for fucking up.

I post this because they have been a football powerhouse since the beginning of time.

This may mean that the kids will be absorbed by other schools in the Galveston/Texas City area. That would be a big deal.

Or, the high school may still exist. That happens sometimes in these cases.

So last night after I watched Moses - I mean, God - carve tablets and save the most ungrateful race of people on earth, I left the tv on during the news (really wanted to watch the weather). After the news and the Hansenfest, the high school special came on. I wasn't really watching it but it was on. About 10 minutes in the host started an in studio interview with a bunch of teenage girls and their male coach from Bishop Lynch High School. I think they were soccer players but I can't say for sure. Anyway the hose starts talking to the coach (I didn't hear his name) and I swear I recognize the dude but I just couldn't place it. Towards the end I was just chalking it up to bad memory or deja vu or whatever, until he shared the story of why only special kids get to wear the numbers 11 and 12 on his team. It's because his childhood friend "Greg" died while playing a high school baseball game. Instantly I remembered this guy's name (Darrin) and that he was a coworker of mine at Fletcher's Corny Dogs in Irving when I was 16. At first I thought "Oh wow, isn't it a small world" and then I remembered the dude was kind of a dick back then. He was a short fucker like me but he played sports and hung with the in crowd. I remembered when the kid died. During the baseball game he told the coach he had a headache and laid down at the end of the bench. A few minutes later when they check on him he was dead. Aneurysm I guess. Darrin was pretty torn up about it. They were best buds and I think had been since they were little.

Anyway since I wasn't really paying attention to the interview I looked up Darrin on the interwebs for more info. Turns out he also works as a youth coach for FC Dallas and in 1998 while he was a girl's coach at a high school in Allen he was arrested for soliciting and receiving a blowjob from a 16 year old girl. He was acquitted. I didn't read where he was a boys coach anywhere in his career.
