Went home for lunch today which I usually don't do. Switched on the TV and the 2A Divison 1 championship was on, Muenster vs. Tenaha. In the short time I was there, I saw riveting football. Back at work, I passed by the superintendent's office and he was watching the same game online. He thought the same thing that I did about the quality of the game. Muenster won.

I was all fired up to watch the 3A Div. 2 tilt tonight and stupid ass Stars hockey was on and the football game wasn't on any of the alt channels. Just as well, Newton is putting a whoopin' on defending champ Gunter. I have a couple of friends who are Gunter fans and they went to this thing. Attendance was 15,000.

The Stars probably had a rare full house tonight, but about 15,000 of those were there to see the opposing team.

Watched a terrific game between Highland Park and Manvel tonight. Absolutely awesome.

I couldn't find the game on the Alt satellite channels so I did Sling TV for a trial subscription. I ended up finding the game on satellite. I couldn't help notice the picture on Sling was choppy, but I don't know if it's my video card or if the quality of Sling's delivery isn't so great.

More research is needed.

The games running up to 2 days before Christmas and some schools being in until Friday probably did them no favors with attendance.

The Lake Travis QB injury was brutal.

List of enrollment numbers 2016

The numbers are crazy. Doesn't anyone know why there is such a huge imbalance in regards to 6A? Do the smaller schools insist on being 6A just for status? Why don't they spread these out to make it a little more fair?

Outside of the private schools, it's based strictly on enrollment numbers. Schools can't drop a division because they don't want to play a bigger school.

He'll go back to not caring again when the anger of Trinity having to play Allen in the playoffs subsides. Right now he's on a mission.

I'm sure this is all JD's fault. If only the Trojans hadn't run Nolan Ryan off to Houston.

The UIL will use instant replay during the championship football games this year. It is be like college rules for the most part, and no coach challenges will be allowed. Replays must be ordered from the booth.

I hate on the UIL a lot, but I agree with this decision. If they are going to review calls in the 6-man games, that will be pretty funny.

This is the weekend of the state championship of the Texas High School Bass Association. I shit you not.

The two-day tournament is being held at Lake Sam Rayburn, which is on the other side of Nacogdoches, damn near to Beaumont.

It is common in smaller schools to have a "sendoff" for the kids who are going to state in an athletic event. Kids stand outside with signs and wave goodbye to the school vehicle that is hauling the students and coaches off to state. A few days ago, a friend of mine (a principal at another school) had a sendoff for his kids who were going to state. In bass fishing.

He thought it was funny. Me too.

I hadn't even thought of that. I believe you are correct. Hoob ISD has had teams, and I've never heard of the school providing anything for them. One of the principals served as their advisor, which is kinda like a coach.

Like everything else here, they haven't made the playoffs.

Trinity took care of business against Arlington Martin on Friday. We've had a decent passing game this year but we might have thrown 2 passes the whole game. Not sure what the strategy there was but it didn't matter again Martin.

And we haven't had a punt returner the whole year. We all speculate that the potentially bad outweighs the potentially good. We saw a good example on Friday night when a Martin kid muffed a return and we ended up recovering.

Our kicking game is bad to quite bad. On kickoffs, field goals and extra point are always dicey.

We probably won't go very far in the playoffs but it's fun to watch the kids play their hearts out.

Trinity is playing El Paso Franklin in Midland on Friday. I don't think I'm gonna make the game.

I went to the semi-finals last weekend to watch Allen get taken care of. That was a helluva game. I didn’t go to watch the championship but I watch it on the tv. Holy hell, what a finish. I regret not going but I had too much stuff to do to get ready for Christmas.

High school football in Texas is crazy!

It seems that one of the boat captains for the Gainesville High School team is accused of doing some cheatin'. This caused him to have to turn himself in to the local coppers and have to post bond. Fishing tournament fraud. I've heard of it in pro tourneys but never at the high school level.

The P1 picking games with the Musers this week was named Eric. The first game on the docket was Trinity v Colleyville. Both Musers smartly picked Trinity. Eric picked Colleyville. Fuck Eric.

L.D. BELL!!!

Gonna be an ass whoopin' tonight! Throw the record books out the window when these 2 fierce rivals face each other! Emotions run so high they have to play the game on Thursday instead of Friday so the city doesn't get torn up after the game (no, seriously)

MaxPreps has the score at 21-7 but the scorekeeper must have dozed off int the 2nd half because the final score was 42-7. That makes 22 in a row for Trinity is this series. LD Bell suuuuuucks.

I think the Musers' weekly football picker this week was a Bell alum? And fuck MaxPreps.

On Friday I worked a 2A game for a small newspaper as usual. The crowd was small and neither team had a band, so it was quiet. At some point one of the teams attempted a 30 yard field goal and the poor kicker pulled it wide left. As soon as the ball left his foot, this was clearly heard over everything and everyone:

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

The coaches didn't think it was as funny as I did. I thought it was hilarious.

I understand high school football isn't going to have the highest level refereeing, but holy hell sometimes it's just infuriatingly bad. Trinity lost to Haltom last night and it was widely due to officiating. Bad calls went against both teams but some CRUCIAL bad calls went against Trinity.

Probably the biggest blown (or suspect) call was when we stopped Haltom on a 4th & 1. The line judge on the side of the play clearly indicated the ball came up 1/2 yard short, but the head ref flew in the pile, grabbed the ball and placed it 1/2 yard ahead of the sticks, called it a 1st and hurried up Haltom to run a play. When the ball was snapped, whistles started blowing because ALL OF THE OTHER REFS KNEW THE BALL WAS SHORT OF THE LINE TO GAIN, but by then it was too late because what are you gonna do? Put the ball back down and measure? The sticks had already been moved!

Another was a HORRIBLE interference call on a 3rd & forever and several suspicious "personal foul" calls that were always away from the play (where no person or cameras were watching). And then there were plenty of no calls for false starts, late hits out of bounds and much more egregious pass interference than what we were getting called for.

We did plenty to kill ourselves, though. I think we had 4 fumbles just in the first half and we had trouble blocking up the middle, allowing big rushing gains. And for some reason we kept trying to run up the middle when it was clear our back could bounce outside for better gains.

And then with a few minutes left in the game Trinity scores the go ahead TD, making it 20-16. For reasons I still cannot figure out, our coach went for 2, trying to make it 22-16. We didn't make the conversion, and as I predicted at the time, Haltom scored a TD making it 23-20. We drove down the field and with 3 seconds left, we were attempting the game TYING field goad instead of the game winning one. Unfortunately we missed it, so in the end it didn't matter. Still though... what the fuck, coach.

Next Friday we play the mighty Roos of Weatherford, who look to be pretty formidable this year. We'll be at home, so perhaps the ref crew will call the game a little more fair.

Officiating is only going to get worse.

I stood on the sidelines of a junior high game Thursday and the guy on my side was an old guy I've spoken to before and he knows his stuff. The white hat in this game (another old guy) was tee-totally clueless. The official nearest me kept a running commentary on how bad it was.

It's funny that these guys will work a 2A junior high game on Thursday, then a 5A game in Dallas on Friday.

I hate that Trinity had to deal with this. You'd think they could find better officials at that level, but it doesn't happen.

Trinity whooped up on the Richland Rebels last night to seal the district championship. We'll play Arlington Lamar this coming Friday at our house. :fist:

Yay, Greggo.

I worked at my previous school for 11 years. They were district champs the first year I was there, then they farted and fell down the next 10. In my previous 26 years in the school business, I've seen a lot of bad football.

My new school is district champs, so I have playoff football in my future. I can't wait.

Wylie High won their district, and I only know this because Tit Jr has to go this Friday because of band stuff. I looked up who they're playing (Prosper) and found the 6A D1 tourney bracket and holy fuck there's 64 teams in this thing. And there's several of these things. You guys take this shit seriously, I see.

Thursday night I covered a 2A football game south of Wichita Falls. After the game ended, the stadium announcer said, "Y'all be safe driving home, and keep an eye out for wild hogs and deer out on the highways."

It was 36 degrees when the game ended.

I am traveling farther west next weekend and the forecast is about the same. Maybe a 20 percent chance of rain. Hopefully it will be as much fun as this last game was.

Well when you only have 2 plays in your game plan, the other team is gonna figure it out. I swear 80% of our plays was "Load Left", 10% was "Load Right", and the other 10% were passing or toss plays that actually gained positive yards.

Lamar sniffed our secondary out early. Our number 9 got picked on the whole game. In the second half the coach put him on the opposite side to let the other receiver join in the fun, I guess. I felt sorry for the kid.

Special teams got their ass handed to them. We had a blocked field goal. Lamar had a successful onside kick where the ball didn't even go 10 yards. We have fielded MAYBE 3 punts in 2 years. 99% we just don't have anyone back there. We field kickoffs so I know we have kids that can catch the ball.

We got a break when the refs screwed up the down count and actually shorted Lamar a down. On that set of downs they went for it on 4th and whatever and we stopped them. Just about everyone in the stands knew what happened but we're like "whew whatever it takes I guess". Our dumbass coaching staff called a timeout to discuss god knows what. During that timeout, Lamar's head coach successfully convinced the refs to review their down count. After 10 FUCKING MINUTES the refs finally figured it out and gave the ball back to Lamar, who then went on to score.

There's been a LOT of chatter in the stands this year about the coaching staff, and it ramped up towards the end of this game. We have a shit ton of raw talent on our team that allows us to take care of most average schools fairly easily, but when we match up against a team that knows what they're doing we look awful. We still win a bunch of those games because of the talent difference, but first we have to overcome the hurdles our coaching staff has given us. I doubt it will happen, but I would love to see a new staff next year.

BTW, if you go to a game this post season, pray you don't get this officiating crew. It wasn't that they were bad (they actually called a decent game), it's just that every flag was followed by a 2 minute discussion. It was "officiating by committee". No one would make a fucking decision. False start? "Okay, fellas, let's huddle up. Jim, you threw the flag, what did you see?" "Well Dave, I saw 74 jump before the ball was snapped." "Okay, thanks, Jim. Steve? How about you, did you see 74 jump?" "No, Dave, I'm the back judge and don't look for that. Isn't it enough that Jim saw it? Why are we all fucking huddled up in the middle of the field discussing a goddam false start, you fucking moron?" "Hah, good one, Steve. Anyone else? No? Going once... twice... okay, I guess we'll call it then. Thanks, guys."

Every. Fucking. Time.

Some coaches don't care: "by god we are gonna run the ball and let's see if they can stop it."

I hate photographing primarily running teams. The worst of the lot is the damned wishbone. Hoob ISD played a wishbone team this year and it was horrendous. The poor bastards agreed to a running clock the entire fourth quarter to keep the score under 90. I felt sorry for the kids but not the stupid coach who ran the MFing wishbone.

My previous school had an offensive coordinator who was a spread guy and smart as a whip, but the head coach had won a championship in the 90s running the wishbone. So guess what they ran.
