It helps that the Angels and Mariners are underachieving pretty big. I still wouldn't count out the typical late summer surge from Oakland, but their owners seem pretty intent on tanking.

Glad to see the owners finally figure out JD has been part of the problem. A few days ago they only had 13,000 in attendance. Jerrah has lost for over 25 years and still sells out every game.

Maybe now they'll spend some money and get some pitching!

He only helped build a team that went to the world series twice and then managed to put together back to back division winners with a rookie manager after losing a number of big pieces to free agency. Oh and he rebuilt a decimated farm system multiple times after tri-polar owners kept changing directions, including the current system. I'm looking forward to the next scapegoat that the KRLD Ranger fans blame for everything. It's probably time for a fresh set of eyes, but JD was far from the biggest problem. Few GMs would have stuck around for 18 years and 3 pretty terrible ownership groups.

:babyarm: Like most logical people, I’m ok with moving on here, but the timing is weird AF. They’re in the last year of a rebuild and the farm system has been beefed up. Would have made more sense to fire him when they were still trying to be competitive and failing. The last 2 seasons have gone as expected. The owners supposedly signed off on this rebuild. The Rangers will probably be above .500 next year and generic fans will say it’s because JD is gone.

He did give Brad Miller a 2nd guaranteed year though.

Post subject:  Re: Rangers 2022

C'mon. If they're .500 next season, it's because of Nolan. But seriously, any success that's rooted in the farm system either through prospects traded or guys that come up is because of JD's direction. Not enough has been made this week about how often and how well he's done that. The ownership group has been in continuous panic mode while they figure out a way to max value to get the team sold. If not for COVID, we would probably have a new owner with a completely different outlook.

And yeah, in 18 years, you'll have some misses to go with your hits. For every Brad Miller signing and Yu Darvish trade, you have a Beltre signing and a Teixeira trade (and the Gallo trade looks pretty decent a year later).

I was talking about attendance. :dunno:

Post subject:  Re: Rangers 2022

The 13k attendance game was on what was the first day of school for a lot of the area. If JD was responsible for that low attendance, was he also responsible for the 31,000 that showed up to see them play Seattle 2 days before that? And the Cowboys play 9 home games. The Rangers play 81. Apples meet oranges.

Post subject:  Re: Rangers 2022

I made the comment as a joke but looking at it a little closer I may be on to something. They're averaging 1500 less butts than they did last year, and it's been trending down for a while. They're averaging under 25k/game, something they haven't done since 2008, and before that it was in 1988! I'm sure attendance wasn't the only factor in JD's firing, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't a sizable one.

Winning = attendance, so you could make the argument that they go hand in hand. Weird that attendance is down this year since they're 2 games away from matching last year's win total with 6 weeks to go and the product on the field is exponentially better.

Well yeah, winning = keeping your job unless you go on a coke bender or your boss wants all the credit.

Of the 3 old men that everyone wanted, he's probably the best. I love Wash, but I don't know that he's the answer here. The 3 year deal tells me that he's here because he thinks they're ready to compete soon.

Corey Kluber doesn't make it out of opening day, DeGrom gets shut down on the first day of spring training. The next pitcher the Rangers try to roll out might die at his press conference.

I don't know that Bally's folding is going to make it that much easier to watch games unless they go completely with local channels.

If teams hope to salvage a big chunk of their fanbase they will make their product available. They're going to have to figure out a way to ride out the ridiculous tv contracts and make some salary adjustments when it comes time to renew.

Post subject:  Re: Rangers 2022

Oh, yeah, they'll get games out there. If it's not local tv, it's going to be expensive. They'll still take it in the shorts with respect to losing their tv deals, but they aren't going to write it off either.

Musers have been talking the last couple of weeks about the Rangers being the best team in the league and that they're gonna win 90 games (maybe 100!!!) have had my eyes rolling so hard. It's like they don't remember this team's SOP is to be Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde most years. Tear it up the first half of the season and then shit the bed after the All-Star break. What a couple of noobs.
