I'm guessing that Lewin was sent packing because they want a guy without a bunch of side work with national broadcasts and football.

From Norm: "Cliff Lee's agent is going to go after the longest and most money contract he can get"

• According to Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal, Nolan Ryan “didn’t sound confident” about the Rangers’ chances to sign Cliff Lee, expressing doubt as to how much of a factor the lefthander’s time with the Rangers would be. Summarizing his story on Twitter, Costa said: “Ryan said he expects Yankees to outbid Rangers” for Lee. Among Ryan’s comments to Costa (and Ken Davidoff and Joel Sherman and presumably others): “If you want to just talk about who probably would be positioned to bid the most money, you’d have to go with the Yankees. That’s their history. We have no reason to think it’s going to be any different.”

I don't think it was ever a question that Lee was going to sign with the Yankees. If they want someone they get him. Players go after the money and who can blame them?

I don't blame him, but I guess I was naive enough to think the Rangers could compete financially for him, with the new ownership and new TV deal. Sounds like they're going hard after Victor Martinez. Yeah.

Newberg said to take Costa's take on the Nolan quotes with a grain of salt because he probably isn't all that familiar with Nolan's demeanor. Eh. It's not over until it's over, but I don't think the Yankees are going to allow themselves to be topped on this issue again.

He wasn't on the postseason roster, mind you. He just gets paid by the team who won one.

Is it worth it if the Rangers overpay for Lee and not have anything left for anyone else? Would that be like the ARod deal all over again? I'm all for pitching but spending a third of your payroll on one guy doesn't sound smrt.

Even though I hated that in 1996 the Yankees beat the Rangers by coming from behind in every damned game, I loved Jim Leyritz and can't explain it. Maybe it was the crazy batting stance, I don't know. When he hit the homer off of Mark Wohlers in the World Series I was happy. When he got into trouble for drinking and then killing a drunk driver I really hated it.

Today he was acquitted of DUI manslaughter, which maybe kept his ass from going to the pokey. He was convicted of driving under the influence which is a lesser sentence. The defense tried to make the point that although he blew a .14 three hours after the wreck, he wasn't that drunk when the wreck happened. They go through a long scientific explanation for this.

Have served on a DWI jury, I heard this crap and I didn't buy it then although some of the other jurors did.

However, I'm glad the real Yankee number 13 got off on the lesser charge. Stay hard, Jim.

Hoob.

I'll always love him for that HR off Wohlers, and a strong like for his 15th inning dinger off the M's the year before.

I bet he celebrated by getting plastered.

You're assuming too much. You don't know what their payroll is any more than I do. You're also assuming there are a lot of holes that need to be filled after the ace. DH yeah. They need to do something at C. 1B is iffy, but not terrible. 5th starter, I guess, though they have that guy on their roster already. I'm less concerned about the bullpen than most people. Everything else is covered.

Although trading for Greinke intrigues me too. Newberg's been talking about it a lot.

I'm not sold on Greinke yet. Too many head problems. I think he'd crack under playoff pressure.

And you should always worry about your bullpen. Most bullpen guys that are great one year suck the next.

I've read payroll will probably be around $80 based on the new tv deal. I think my biggest concern is the number of years he's rumored to want (I've heard up to 7). Of course, if the Rangers win with him now then who cares how long he hangs around after his usefulness wears off?

So the Rangers hire Thad Bosley as their hitting coach. He coached at a college last year, was with the A's about 10 years ago. It's an odd hire but the OSB has latitude with me.

I wonder what's gonna happen when the average fan looks out there and realizes that a good portion of the coaching staff is black.

Here's a paragraph that I copied from his wiki page. It made me grin:

Bosley was briefly a member of a funk group called Ballplayers which featured another Major League Baseball journeyman named Lenny Randle. Some of their music can be heard on a compilation called "Family Album" which was released in 2010 on the DC-based music label, People's Potential Family.
