TIL, bell peppers can be male or female. Male peppers have 3 bumps on the bottom. Females have 4. Next time you buy peppers, make sure to check for 4 bumps and get female peppers because if you eat a male pepper you're fucking gay. |

Bell peppers come in a variety of bright colors that are pretty like green, yellow, red, and orange. Do you have a favorite color bell pepper? |

They also come in chocolate/brown, vanilla/white, and purple. My favorite is the common green, though reds have twice the vitamin C of greens. |

I'm not much a fan of cooked peppers. I understand the flavor and stuff but I don't eat them on my fajitas. I did have some red peppers on a panini the other day and they escalated that sammich in my opinion. |

The green ones are just unripe red ones btw. Like jalapenos, they get sweeter as they ripen. Bell peppers are okay charred but shouldn't be cooked to soften like onion. They should remain crispy. Fresh ripe bells are great fillers in salads. I see them as a recipe in chili sometimes but I've never tried it. |

TIL, the Frisbee is officially 60 years old.  It is also in the toy hall of fame. Do you have any exciting memories involving frisbees? I remember flicking them around with buds. A lot of times they would just get left lying in the yard for extended periods. Red and yellow frisbees would fade in the sun the worst. Sometimes if left on the grass too long the grass under them would die. Do you know something else? I'm left handed but I throw a frisbee right handed. Weird, huh?

TIL the story of Jimmie Nicol. I had never heard of him before. During the height of Beatlemania in 1964 Ringo became ill with tonsillitis, and this man substituted on drums for 8 concerts & lived a superstar's life for 10 days. But alas Ringo returned. Jimmie Nicol thought the stint would propel his music career, but he was soon forgotten when he returned to his normal life. He kicked around a few more bands before trading his musical aspirations for entrepreneurial interests. According to his wiki page, he never sought to profit from the experience or to really talk about it which is kind of cool. TIL I got a half-brother out there somewhere. Yeah someone pegged my sainted mother when she was 18 or so and she had the kid and put him up for adoption. She never told my dad about it. Took it to her grave. That's Catholic guilt for ya. Anyhoo, the guy wants to know about his biological parents so he hired a PI, and the PI contacted my dad with some questions. My dad has no qualms with talking with the guy and telling him about her so they may talk some day. It's kinda cool but also pretty dang shocking. I'm not getting any more work done today, I tell ya that much. Twist: This half-bro has the same first name as my real bro. Fuckin' ponderous, man. |

I have a couple of friends that have been through something similar. One of them found out his mom gave up a daughter that she had as a teenager. When the daughter was in her forties, she found her birth mom through some amateur internet research. His mom had never told anyone other than his dad and, the next summer, they had a big reunion he and his siblings could all meet their half sister for the first time. Everyone was pretty cool about it and she's pretty much a regular part of their family now. Another friend that was adopted at birth sought out her birth mother and it turned out that her birth parents had eventually married and had 4 more kids. When her husband retired from the military, they moved to Kansas where her birth family lived so she could make up for lost time. I can't imagine the shock and it's great that you seem cool about it. I think that the guilt that your mom may have felt was pretty common amongst people in similar situations during that time period. |

The grandmother lady that was my mom's mom was a serious Roman Catholic and I'm sure she guilted the shit outta my mom over it. She was probably sent to some place full of nuns who went full Handmaid's Tale on her and convinced her the only emotion she should have toward it is shame. The only person left who might be able to verify anything is my uncle, and he was in the Army at the time so all this might be news to him, as well. As proof that my dad has a type, this same thing happened with my step-mom. She's still alive and can talk about it, but said the sense of shame followed her for years until she had the reunion with her daughter. |

My dad spoke with the new kid. They had a nice conversation. New kid sent us the PI report, which was interesting. Learned some family history wasn't apprised of before. They still don't know who the father was except he was some French farmboy with curly hair and green eyes. That could be anyone. Also, a couple years ago, new kid was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer. He got treatment and went into remission, but something may have returned. He needs more tests. That kinda sent him on this pursuit of his biological parents, and I'm sorry to say he may have some bad genes since my mom died of ovarian cancer at 53 and her mom died of boob cancer at 55. He's also got a sister who lives about an hour south of my dad in Florida. He's visiting her in a couple weeks and they're gonna meet my dad for lunch. Maybe we'll get more information then. He lives in WA and works for Microsoft. Worked directly with Bill Gates at one time, so I assume he's smart and, more importantly, loaded. There's an angle here I need to figure out how to exploit. For now, he wants to be friends on Facebook with me and my brother, but, nuh-uh, dude, Zuckerberg sucks, no Facebook for us. Must find another way. |
