I tell you what I'd do. Two chicks at the same time, man. If I won the powerball I could hook that up, cause chicks dig dudes with money.

Didn't really buy it. I used Gamestop points on it. It does a terrific job opening bottles of beer, much better than the souvenir Universal Studios bottle opener I've been using.

A seasoned pro photog that I know just bought a super zoom lens and has been raving about it. Looked it up online and it is $1400. That is extremely cheap for that sort of thing. However, this inspired me to buy the next brand down and spent $900 on it. It looks like a fucking bazooka, and that's plenty for me. He turned his nose up at it when he saw me. Fuck that.

This also caused me to buy a monopod to keep it steady, something I have never had to use before. Fuck that.

He also bought a new camera. I looked at his old one and memorized the model number and looked it up. $6250. Fuck that, too. Not taking that step.

I noticed a couple of people were wearing some sort of sling that they carried their cameras on, including that guy. They are cheap on Amazon if you search for them, about 20 bucks. Then I looked on B and H (a well-known camera seller) and the real ones are $73. Since I don't want my rig to fall down onto some fucking concrete and get ruined, I bought the expensive one.

I need to stop looking at these people's stuff, because it results in me buying shit that I don't need.

The sling for the camera is the bees knees. However, I had to figure out how to use it in about five minutes, and it proved to be a source of mirth for the baseball team that I was covering.

One of the players studied me for a while, then pointed out the way that the straps go and helped secure them. Now I am one step closer to looking like a camera douche.

In other news, I've already lost my monopod. Fuck that.

Post subject:  Re: Shit I've bought but probably don't need

Had a couple of important photo assignments this week, so I bought a new monopod to replace the one I lost after using it once. Here is the problem: the one I lost was crap because it was cheap and I couldn't trust it to hold $2000 worth of camera equipment. I needed to spend money on a better one and find a way to not lose the damned thing.

So I bought a Manfrotto pod, about $200. They had models that were a lot more expensive than that. I've kept it for 7 days and not lost it yet. Yet.

Not if you were one of the first 500 who went to the game. They're $65 on ebay.

I sometimes mention that I cover high school games for random newspapers. This has been a really good year because I am finally getting the hang of it after all of these years. Because I am a cheapass, I use an $850 camera for my fun. My brand has a top-level model. I looked up the price of the older version of it and thought that maybe I would buy it and be kinda cool. It was $6250. Fuuuuuuuuuuck that.

Welp, I bought a new camera this week.

A new co-worker was telling us about an air fryer that she bought, how she could cook food for the family in no time with little or no oil. I bought one today. $70. Looking at the cooking times, I don't see that it's any quicker.

I just want something to cook fish without frying it and not having to deal with baking it. I'll check it out in the next couple of days.

Let me know how it works out. I've got a couple of coworkers that have been talking it up but I haven't pulled the trigger.

By that same token, I bought an Instant Pot pressure cooker a while back and get a heckuva lot of use out of it.

I'm intrigued by the instapot when I hear people talk about making short ribs or a soup in 15 minutes or a chuck roast in 30 minutes. Are they the real deal? I'm always worried that there's some sort of sacrifice in quality. One of my buddies that's a snobbish good cook is using one now and that's getting me closer to buying one.

Pressure cooking is how you get fall-off-the-bone ribs, if you're into that sort of thing. It's not bad, but it's definitely not the same as bbq. Pressure cooking does really well with making soups, broth, pot roasts, boiled/poached eggs, salsa, rice... the list goes on. Some even have a yogurt function if that's your thing. The Instant Pot I have has a way to control the actual temp so I can sous vide, which is nice.

There is a ton of info on electric pressure cookers and recipes out there. The Instant Pot is kinda like the iPhone of cookers right now. It definitely has a cult following and just a ton of info available.

The air fryer did well on its first try. I cooked catfish in it tonight and it was really good. I put the same amount of batter on it as when I bake, and it was a little too much. No oil was used. It was so strange that the consistency was like fried fish and not baked fish.

Once I get better at using the damned thing, it should be better.

My main goal is to cook fish and chicken in it during the summer months and not heat up the house. I think maybe I can accomplish that now.
