New Canaan Considers Tracking Devices for Students

Student involvement would be voluntary and parents would have to agree to it, Supt. Dr. David Abbey, told the Advertiser. Translation: Until such time that we can think of the legal wording to make it mandatory so that it would stand up in court.

24 Hour Fitness rolls out finger scanners at gyms

Company officials say the voluntary program allows members to show up without ID, prevents nonmembers from sneaking in, and saves the cost of making and mailing club cards.

It would appear that my days at 24 Hour are numbered.

biometric scanning? Really? Fuck a bunch of that.
With all the assurances these assholes make, it only takes one pissed off, passive/aggressive/bipolar code monkey to screw the pooch.

People don't realize and remember how many people really are behind the scenes with stuff like this.
Yeh, yeh, 24 Hour Fitness can say all they want about security, but security is about trusting people, not software.
If you have ONE pissed off geek behind the scenes, there is no security.

What if someone spots somebody planting the tracking device and assumes that person is stealing their car? According to the castle doctrine in Texas it's legal to shoot someone commiting a crime on your property. I guess since they aren't actually stealing the car the shooter would fry but what a mess.

I think it's pretty sorry that they can secretly install that on your car without a warrant but you can't legally purchase a jammer to block the signal. That whole "without a warrant" thing bothers me.

in a few years this will be moot. Eventually the government will ensure that all vehicles must be equipped with GPS in order to implement a "road use" tax.

Of course the government will be able to track your every move, but not to worry, as they'll promise not to do that for law enforcement purposes. They'll do it in order to "study traffic trends" and "improve services"

if it was a way to track things without the possible invasion of privacy I'd be all over a road use tax.

It's called registration and it's already implemented. There is no use to refine it any more than it is. Ich is right on this, the government will use it as an excuse to track us poor citizens for no reason.

how is that a usage tax? you could drive 10000 miles a year and I could drive 2000 and we'd pay the same amount.

Don't forget along the way I'll be paying a shitload of taxes for gas, oil, tires, etc. The govt gets their money no matter what.

But you're right, registration isn't actually a "usage" tax, but it's supposed to be used for the roads and bridges in your county. Who knows where the money actually goes.

You're dreaming. That information would HAVE to be made available for marketing purposes. What are the most traveled routes. Where are you stopping between work and home etc.

Indoctrinate them while they're young... Then they won't object as adults....

California students get tracking devices

This will be great. In the future, we can track our comings and goings and apply building use fees, sidewalk use fees, did we enter a liquor store or bar previous to having an accident? (Law Enforcement Investigative Savings)... The possibilities to SAVE money are boundless! Wow!
