These are the weasel words used to ensure that the program passes muster with the general public;

The new plan explicitly states that existing laws which prevent the government from spying on citizens would remain in effect, the official said. Under no circumstances, for instance, would the program be used to intercept verbal and written conversations.

The only problem is that the government just waits for everyone to become comfortable before "suddenly" deciding that it is in the "best interest of the public" that closer monitoring occur, because, afterall, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide! :mad:

Good, quick interview with Michael Scheuer, author of "Imperial Hubris".

Scheuer is a former CIA employee. In his 22-year career, he served as the Chief of the Bin Laden Issue Station (aka "Alec Station"), from 1996 to 1999, the Osama bin Laden tracking unit at the Counterterrorist Center. He then worked again as Special Advisor to the Chief of the bin Laden unit from September 2001 to November 2004.

" Bin Laden lays them out for anyone to read. Six elements: our unqualified support for Israel; our presence on the Arabian peninsula, which is land they deem holy; our military presence in other Islamic countries; our support of foreign states that oppress Muslims, especially Russia, China and India; our long-term policy of keeping oil prices artificially low to the benefit of Western consumers but the detriment of the Arab people; and our support for Arab tyrannies who will do that."

I have read and agreed with some of what this guy has said, but this makes me go Huh?

1. Our support for Israel is not unqualified.
2. Our presence in the Arabian peninsula has not been entirely forced. There are many in the Arabian peninsula who PAY us to be there.
3. We support Russia? See Condi's comments today about Putin. We do business with China and Russia...much like we do business with Saudi Arabia and several other Islamic nations.
4. So oil prices are artificially low because of us??? WTF??? Last time I saw a hungry suffering Arab, it was at the hand of his government, not ours.
5. and 6.

Sour grapes because Saudi Arabia kicked his ass out of the country and his family has severed ties.

Adding to this problem is the fact that most people don't read anything, watch anything or listen to anything that challenges them. For example, in this shitty town, think of all the fucking idiots that listen to the ticket all day everyday. Just mindlessly listening as they repeat the same sports stories/lame bits all fucking day. When there is political talk it's from this incredibly self centered, self absorbed upper middle class white pussy point of view wherein the police are all upstanding, the government never lies and the lower economic classes are to be feared.

Okay, time to talk about privacy issues again.... latest thing to pucker meh brown eye; my birthday is just around the corner (I know, I can't believe I'm still alive either!) Anyway, in the last two days I've gotten two different cards in the mail from local McKinney businesses wishing me a happy birthday and a discount coupon.

That's nice, but troubling in the aspect that there is no way that a local "Mom and Pop" restaurant should know my birth date unless it was "shared" with them by another business.... Say like a CREDIT CARD company!

It's no wonder that identity theft is so rampant with businesses playing fast and loose with their privacy policies. :mad:

I've got calls into both businesses asking for their source.
